Kendra frowned. Family time was off limits, not least because it was so bloody awkward being around Sarah’s kids. Even though she lived a separate life with her husband, Kendra still had a niggle of guilt about Abi and Reece. “That’s your family time.”

Sarah tweaked Kendra’s nipple. “Abi asked me to invite you. There will be games and a buffet, and an outdoor movie theatre.”

Kendra laughed. “She’s such a cool kid.”

“They’ll be sixteen. It’s a big deal. Friends from school are coming, and grandparents, and a few of our personal friends. Jeremy will be there.”

“Sounds utterly terrifying.”

Sarah laughed. “We’re not that scary, are we?”

Kendra nodded. “Pretty much, yes.”

“Abi will be gutted if you can’t make it.”

The nipple tweaking was really distracting. Kendra pressed her hand to Sarah’s against her chest so she could think. “That’s blackmail.”

Sarah kissed her. “There’s nothing I’m not capable of to get my own way, you know.”

Kendra didn’t doubt that for one second, and it was a massive turn-on. “Really?” she asked. “And what are you going to do to get your own way now?”

Sarah tugged her hand from underneath Kendra’s and slid it between her legs.

“I’ll come,” Kendra said.

“On both counts, I hope.” Sarah eased her fingers inside Kendra. “You’re so ready for this.”

Kendra didn’t disagree as a ribbon of fire weaved its way inside her and released tiny bursts of electric heat. Sarah felt so good inside her. She held Sarah’s gaze as the sensations transformed. The flicker of sadness that found its way through her desire increased the ache in her heart. She knew if it came to it, it would be impossible to let Sarah go without her heart breaking.

15.

“RELAX, LOVE. THE CATERERSand entertainment have got this. All we have to do is enjoy the day with our children.” Mark handed Sarah a glass of wine and smiled at his children. “Where has the time gone, eh?”

“They’re so grown up,” Sarah said. It was both a good and a bad thing. Given that they were almost adults, fast becoming independent, and had a clear idea of what they wanted to do with their lives, it was a blessing. They were mature enough to handle any changes in their family dynamic, although not without some heartache, she was sure. The downside was that they were growing up and no longer needed her. They would leave home soon, and that time would come around quicker than the blink of an eye. Where would she be then, and once her PM days were over?

She studied Mark’s salt and pepper-specked hair. He’d gone grey earlier than most but not bald, thankfully. At thirty-seven, he looked distinguished and neither young nor old, and with his sharp brain and natural charm, it was no surprise his businesses had achieved success.

“Do you remember when we found out I was pregnant?” she asked.

“You screamed at me and kicked me in the balls. How could I forget?” He put his hand to his groin. “I can still feel the pain now,” he said and laughed.

She elbowed him in the arm. “I was vicious, wasn’t I? But look at us now.”

“You’ve done a great job, love,” he said.

She sighed. “It doesn’t feel like it.”

He shrugged. “There’s no one way to bring up children. It’s been good for them to know what it’s like to have a successful mum. It’s helped Abi realise she can have ambition too. It’s still a man’s world, sadly, but you are a great mum.”

He might be right, but still she wished she’d been there for them more often. The next few months were going to require her working non-stop, and if she achieved PM, that was unlikely to change for the foreseeable future.

“You don’t seem like yourself,” he said and took a drink of his beer.

“You know me so well.” She sipped her wine.

“Is it Kendra?”

Sarah looked away. “I don’t know what it is.” She wasn’t lying; she was confused. She’d wanted the top job for so long, and now she was on the brink of success, all her doubts were rising up and tormenting her. Was she good enough? Did she want the press watching her that closely? She would have to curtail her trips abroad, of course. She’d always known that would be the case, but she hadn’t fully appreciated what it would feel like when the time came. Jeremy was on her back over Kendra, and the threat of someone digging deeper into her past was increasingly more likely heading into an election. She’d be naïve to think she could carry on with her love affairs and get away with it. Even though they weren’t technically affairs. She still carried guilt over the potential impact on her children too, should her situation hit the front pages of the news. That guilt had helped keep her distanced from women for the most part. Kendra was different from the other women she’d been attracted to. And different was a potential problem that she hadn’t yet worked out how to handle.
