“You distracted me when I arrived. I wasn’t seeing much at all for a while.” She kissed Kendra and held her gaze. “If you let me eat, I’ll be set for the rest of the night, and I’m not talking about sleeping.”

Heat rose to Kendra’s cheeks. She sat and picked at her food. It was hard to find her appetite when all she could think about was spending the night with Sarah.

When they’d gone to bed, Kendra had watched the slow rise and fall of Sarah’s chest and the subtle shift in her appearance that exposed a youthfulness that was absent when Sarah was at work. She’d not wanted to fall asleep for fear of waking to find it had been a dream, and she’d opened her eyes several times during the night just to check Sarah was still there. She’d snuggled up to her, to feel her close, and enjoyed Sarah’s soft mumblings when she wrapped her arm around Kendra’s body.

Now, listening to the birds’ chorus, she watched Sarah sleep as the sun spilled light into the bedroom. If every day was like this, Kendra would be in paradise, but Sarah had promised to be home by ten for a summer picnic with her family in the park, and this moment would come to an end before she was ready.

There would be a press release for the park, of course, showing the politician, the mum, and the wife doing what all families did on a summer’s weekend. Family values was still a significant item on the party’s agenda and one that a large proportion of Sarah’s voters aligned with. Feeding them snippets of her life kept them content and ensured the money rolled into the campaign coffers.

Sarah rolled onto her back and stretched. Kendra pressed her lips to Sarah’s, and Sarah wrapped her arms around Kendra’s neck.

“Morning,” Kendra whispered.

Sarah opened her eyes and smiled. “Hi,” she said and tugged Kendra to her and kissed her again. “I ache in all the right places,” she said.

Kendra swept strands of hair from Sarah’s face. “I’ll go and make breakfast.”

Sarah tugged her closer and for a moment, Kendra was tempted to stay put and make the most of their time together, but she wanted more than sex. She wanted to be in a relationship with Sarah rather than an affair. Maybe she was delusional or just didn’t want to think of herself as the other woman. Whatever this feeling was, it sucked. She wanted to be with Sarah, and yet the impossibility of the situation was clear. She’d thought when Sarah had said she wanted Kendra, Sarah had meant they could be together. Sarah didn’t know what she wanted. What they had was what it was, and it seemed it wasn’t going anywhere.

She gave a half-smile that reflected the painful reality. Sarah would be leaving on a train in a couple of hours, and she didn’t know when they would next spend quality time together. “I can’t let you go until you’ve at least had coffee and toast.”

Sarah stroked her arm, across her belly, and up to her breast. She kissed her nipple and tweaked it with her teeth, and Kendra jerked with the sensation that fluttered in her core. She slid out of the bed, put on her bath robe, and leaned towards Sarah to kiss her tenderly. “I’ll put some coffee on. Feel free to use the shower.” She went into the kitchen and smiled as the sound of the shower kicked in. The coffee had brewed by the time Sarah wandered into the room. Her hair was wet, and she smelled of Kendra’s shower gel. She bit her lip to stop herself from asking Sarah to stay a bit longer. “Can we do this again sometime?” she asked and sipped her coffee.

“I’d like that,” Sarah said.

“When?” Kendra didn’t mean to push and read the frown on Sarah’s face that said she didn’t need that kind of pressure either.

“Maybe next Thursday. I’ve got a meeting with the shadow chancellor until six but could get away straight after.”

Kendra bit into the toast but found it hard to swallow. She’d known getting involved with Sarah would come with restrictions, but she hadn’t expected to feel as strongly she did. She’d thought it would be simple, have some fun without commitment, and she’d been caught out by her heart, and it was beginning to hurt. She nodded.

Sarah finished her toast and coffee, and Kendra stood at the front door as she walked away, watching her until she was out of sight. She came into the house, picked up her phone, and dialled Malee.

“I was beginning to think working a desk job had killed you,” Malee said. “Where’ve you been?”

Kendra grinned. She didn’t really know why she’d called or what she was going to say. She could hardly tell her about Sarah, even though she trusted Malee not to say anything. “Busy.”

“Busy. That’s all you’ve got to say after six months of not returning my calls.”

Kendra winced. “Yeah, sorry. I meant to call back, but I’ve been working all hours, and the times I thought of calling was your night-time.”

“Lame, Kenny. What’re you up to?”

Kendra rolled her eyes at Malee’s tone. “Nothing,” she said and sounded unconvincing.

“I can tell.”

“I’ve been spending time with Sarah.”Bugger. She bit her lip, and closed her eyes, and waited in the silence that seemed to span minutes.

“The married politician and bookies’ favourite for PM, Sarah Thompson?”

“Yeah, that one.”

“Oh, Jesus Christ, Kenny. You’re involved with her, aren’t you? Are you fucking nuts?”

“It’s not what you think.”

“Of course it is. You’re screwing her. I know you well enough. It’s your pattern. You go quiet for months when you’re preoccupied with a woman in your bed.”
