Sarah leaned across her and took Kendra’s nipple into her mouth and teased it with her tongue and teeth. “I’ll kiss everything better,” she said.

Kendra moaned and arched her back as Sarah sucked her nipple. “I’ve missed this,” she said. She lifted her head and drew Sarah into a deep kiss. “Really missed this.”

She stared at Sarah as if she wanted to say more, her eyes darker and an absence of a smile conveyed seriousness. Sarah knew what the look meant. It reflected her own feelings. Desire and anticipation laced with the fear that this wonderful, incredible thing they shared, this perfection, would come to an end. Maybe that’s why Sarah wanted this moment to last. She kissed Kendra and lay her cheek on Kendra’s chest. “Will you hold me, please?” she asked.

Kendra wrapped her arms around her and kissed her head. “I love you.”

Sarah closed her eyes and let the silent tears slip from her eyes. Those three words were the only thing that mattered. If they had love, she was sure they could work out the details.

30.

SARAH HAD FELT GOODin Kendra’s arms in the tranquillity of the oasis. She’d searched the sky for answers to questions about what the future held. “Whatever you want.” The response had come in the aura of the jungle’s caress. The urgency to make love had calmed though Kendra’s desire was no less. The shift had been a source of fascination, occupying her thoughts as Sarah’s weight had become heavier against her chest. She’d snuggled Sarah closer. She’d closed her eyes for a time and when she’d woken, she’d been sorry to have to disturb Sarah so they could get back to the camp. There had been a stillness within them on the journey back. Sarah had leaned back against Kendra, they’d spotted birds and flora, and talked about nothing of any significance.

From the kitchen area, Kendra shot a glance at Sarah as she rose from the dinner table. She still looked tired but less drawn and more chill. She looked comfortable in her skin and relaxed with her slow, lazy movements and entranced expression. The heart-warming feeling that filtered through Kendra drew a sigh.

“Here, I’ll finish off,” Malee said.

“I can—”

“Bugger off. Go and talk to her.”

Kendra caught up with Sarah on the pontoon heading towards their huts. She matched her stride and brushed lightly against her arm. “Fancy a nightcap?” she asked.

Sarah smiled. “I’d like that.” She leaned closer to Kendra.

Kendra brushed the back of her hand against Sarah’s briefly. It was the closest they’d come to a genuine public display of affection, other than in the field that night close to her parents’ house, and the lightness fixed a smile to her face. She opened the door to her hut and followed Sarah into the room. She poured them both a whisky, and they sat on Kendra’s deck area overlooking the lake.

Frogs could be heard in the interval between the raucous cicadas, a musical score of its own making, and the lights around the huts cast shapes that danced on the near-black lake. Hundreds of thousands of stars, billions of light years away competed with the thousands of fireflies frolicking closer to home. It was the most romantic place in the world. Kendra felt the memory of the moment reach her heart and became overwhelmed with love. “How are you feeling?” she asked.

Sarah took a sip of her drink. “Tired but good.”

Kendra wondered what thoughts had captured Sarah’s imagination as she turned the glass in her hand. “Will you sleep with me tonight?” she asked. “Here.”

Sarah held her gaze. “I want to sleep with you every night,” she said.

Kendra felt the tug of a cynical smile, the huff that she covered with a small laugh rated the chances of that happening as low. The sentiment was nice to hear though. She wanted to talk about what would happen after Sarah went back to England and took the PM role that she was destined to win, but how could she ask when Sarah had said she didn’t want to look that far ahead? Sarah had been clear that she wanted both Kendra and the job, and Kendra had been honest saying she didn’t want that. She wanted the life she had discovered here, freedom from the eyes of those whose sole purpose was to invade their privacy for front-page gossip. She wanted the version of Sarah she’d experienced the last few days, and that would be impossible to achieve if she were the PM, given the stresses and commitments the job would bring. She envisioned late nights, the time spent waiting for Sarah to come home, and the weekends consumed by Sarah working. She had no desire to be involved with the party again, or politics. She would end up going back to landscape gardening and freeze her butt off during the winter months. Eventually, discontent would drive them apart. “I want that too,” she said, because she did, in spite of everything else.

She finished her drink and held out her hand. Sarah took it, and she led her into the room and closed the door to ensure a little privacy. The flow of air through the open window was negligible but better than the full weight of the humidity. She opened the drawer to her bedside table and pulled out a pack of cards.

Sarah frowned. “There was I thinking you were going to make love to me, and you want to play snap?” She traced the line of Kendra’s arm with her finger and watched the tiny hairs rise. “Hm, exactly.”

Kendra waited for the thrill to settle. Sarah wasn’t going to get her way that easily. “I was thinking a little poker,” she said and smiled.

Sarah’s eyes narrowed. “You know I’ve got a great poker face,” she said.

Kendra shrugged. “A true politician speaking.”

Sarah slapped her arm.

Kendra kissed her and handed over the cards. “You shuffle and deal. I don’t want any allegations of cheating when I whoop your ass.”

“Ha. In your dreams.”

“There are many things I’ve done to you in my dreams but losing isn’t one of them.” Kendra made herself comfortable on the bed and rested her back against the headboard.

Sarah sat with her legs crossed facing her and split and shuffled the cards like a professional croupier. She’d already adopted her poker face, and Kendra stared at her and grinned.

“You won’t break me that easily,” Sarah said and dealt the cards.
