I don’t comment. I’d love to see Sid try and set Suzie up. It would be hilarious. I may sound mean, but she’s the one who tattled on me like we’re fifth graders and not in our thirties.

Suzie stands and brushes herself off. I have to give her credit. She marches over to our group without a backward glance. “I’m sorry, Hails. I can’t stand the thought of you being in danger.”

“Why does everyone keep forgetting I’m not the target of whatever this is?”

“Yeah, right.” Wally disagrees. “That’s why your business and your house have been broken into.”

“But nothing was taken and whoever it is didn’t do any yucky stuff in my bedroom.” I don’t know who I’m trying to convince – me or them.

Pops groans and rubs a hand down his face. “Oh great, there’s a visual I won’t be able to erase.”

“Please, forgive me,” Suzie begs. “I’ll clean your house for free.”

She was already going to clean my house. My clean freak friend was itching to get her hands on it all day long. She probably would have demanded payment in the form of donuts and coffee, though.

“Fine.” She jumps and stumbles. Once she’s steady on her feet again, I point at her. “But no more. You hear me? No more going behind my back. We’re a team, dammit.”

“Yes!” she shouts and tackles me. She may be a little thing but she’s a force of nature. I don’t have a chance of keeping my feet under me. We both go down.

“Huh,” Barney mutters, “good thing I didn’t make those bets. Looks like little Suzie took Hailey down after all.”
