“Did she have a rap sheet when you did her background check?”
“No, but—”
“That’s good enough for me.” When she opens her mouth to argue with me, I raise my hand to stop her. “Think about it, Suzie. Why else would her record only be a year old? What’s the most likely explanation? Hint. It’s not because she’s some mastermind criminal.”
She bobs her head as her eyes widen in excitement. “See? I told you she’s in WITSEC.”
I groan. “No, Suzie. Be realistic. She could be hiding from someone. Someone scary. If she were in WITSEC, they would have given her a complete background.”
I may have asked Wally what he knows about WITSEC. I may not want Suzie digging around in Phoebe’s past, but I was still curious as all get out. He explained how those in WITSEC have complete backgrounds with no red flags at all. Which means Phoebe is not in WITSEC.
“Fine,” she grumbles as she stands. “I’ll drop it.”
I’m not stupid. I know she’ll bring up Phoebe’s past again and again. I just hope Suzie’s snooping doesn’t attract whatever or whoever Phoebe is running from.
