“I’ll look after her when you’re out of the office,” Suzie shouts from the other side of the door.

“You were supposed to pretend not to eavesdrop,” I shout back.

“Oh. I guess I missed the secret sign,” she says, but I don’t hear her back away from the door. Typical.

“See?” Aiden smiles. “All settled.”

“No.” I shake my head. “I don’t accept.”

He grabs my wrist and pulls me close. “If you won’t stay with me, at least take the dog.” His thumb rubs against my inner wrist causing sparks to travel from my wrist through my entire body. He smirks as if he realizes the effect he has on me.

I narrow my eyes at him. “You don’t fight fair.”

“Never said I did.” His eyes flick to my lips before he bends over to mold his lips to mine. I moan and his tongue invades my mouth. I wrap my tongue around his and now it’s his turn to moan.

Suzie knocks on the door. “If you two are going to make out, can you let Lola out, so I can play with her?”

“This is why I can’t have a dog. Suzie will never get any work done,” I point out.

He ignores me. “I also have a buddy who will stop by your house tonight.”

I wrinkle my brow. “Why?”

“He’s a security specialist. He can check out your security system and see if it needs any upgrades.”

Someone is trying to save me again. I don’t need anyone to save me. “Did you miss the part where I said I don’t need anyone to take care of me?”

“It’s not a big deal. You need a good security system.”

“I thought the dog was my security system.” When Aiden only stares at me in response, I continue, “Besides, Wally set up my security system.”

“Wally?” I nod. “Okay, I’ll tell my friend he doesn’t need to stop by.”

“You trust Wally, but you don’t trust me?”

“Hailey.” He tucks a strand of hair behind my ear. “I trust you. I do. But I don’t trust the asshole who put a note on your car last night.”

Good point. “Fine, I’ll keep the dog.”

It’s as if Lola can understand what I’m saying. She chuffs before standing and loping toward me. She sticks her big head in between Aiden and me and shakes it back and forth as if she’s trying to separate us.

“Maybe this was a bad idea,” Aiden grumps.

“No take backs!”
