“Aiden said you’d say that.” Snort. His words prove nothing. “Is Lola in there with you?”

At the sound of her name, Lola barks a greeting and starts scratching at the door.

“Call Aiden. Tell him Officer White is here and you need to verify his identity.”

“No need to call Aiden. I’m here.”

At Aiden’s voice, I push Lola out of the way and unlock the door. I fly to him and wrap my arms around him smacking him on the side of the head with the hairspray bottle. Oops. I forgot I was carrying it. I drop it and cling to him.

Aiden enfolds me in his arms. He squeezes tight, but I don’t care. “Shit. You scared me. I knew I shouldn’t have left you alone.”

I bend away from him and glare. “No macho man crap. I’m not in the mood.”

He nods before pulling me close again. I snuggle into his arms for a moment. “Wait. Where’s Lola? Is she okay?”

Aiden chuckles before spinning me around. Lola is on her back getting belly rubs from an African-American police officer.

“My dog is a total slut.”

“Remember the colleague who had to give up Lola?” I nod. “You’re looking at him.”

I rush the guy and tackle him. He falls on his butt and Lola attacks us both with kisses. “Thank you for saving me. And thank you for Lola.” Lola hears her name and dials up the volume on her kiss attack. I push her big head away. “Someone needs to brush her teeth.”

“Come on.” Aiden holds out his hand. “We need to take your statement.”

Oh, yeah. I was trying to forget all about creepy intruder guy. He helps me to my feet.

“Who was the guy anyway? His voice sounded familiar, but I couldn’t place him.”

Aiden freezes. “His voice sounded familiar?”

“Yeah.”

“Do you think you’d recognize him?”

I shrug. “Maybe.”

“Come on.” He drags me through my house and outside where the police are pushing someone into the back of a patrol car. Aiden lets out a whistle and they stop. The man they are arresting looks my way and I gasp.

“I do know him. He came into my office claiming his wife is cheating on him.”

Aiden puts an arm around me and pulls me close. “Do you remember his name?”

I tap my chin as I try to remember. “Benjamin something. I can look in my agenda. As soon as I remember where I put my phone.” I snap my fingers. “It’s in the bathroom.”

Once I retrieve my phone and look through my calendar, I fill Aiden in. “His name is Benjamin Jones, but I’m pretty sure he used a fake name.” I think back to the appointment. I remember he was creepy and scary. And he asked a ton of questions. Well, shit.

“What is it? What do you remember?”

“What a total and utter idiot I am. Benjamin asked question after question on how I operate, and I told him. I told him all about how we didn’t save pictures. My camera!” I run off to retrieve my camera. When I return, I hand it to him. “When we were talking while I was hiding in the bathroom—”

Aiden stops me with a growl. I shush him with a glare.

“He asked for my camera. He must think I took a picture of something I shouldn’t have. He’s definitely not the husband of a client. I’d recognize him if he were.”

Aiden takes the camera and places it in an evidence bag. Shit. That’s going to cost me. He kisses my forehead. “Don’t worry. I’ll have it back to you as soon as possible.”

“Detective Barnes!” One of the uniformed officers shouts. “We’re all set here.”

“I’ll meet you down at the station.”

I grab Aiden’s hand. “I’m going with you.”

He stares at me for a minute before nodding. “You will follow my orders and not go running off on your own.”

I shiver. “Yes, sir. Whatever you say, sir.”

He smirks. “Watch the attitude, McGraw, or I’ll have to teach you a lesson.”

I lick my lips. Yes, please.
