“If you would have stopped calling the guy in the protection suit an alien and saying you wanted to have sex with him, she wouldn’t have kicked you out of the class.”

Suzie is the only person I know who could get herself kicked out of a free community center class for women by being inappropriate. I’m sure she thought she was being funny, but it’s not funny to joke about sex at a self-defense class full of women who want to protect themselves from sexual assault.

“What? Mr. Havers got me to thinking. What if there are aliens? Would the sex with them be good?”

Barney leans forward. “Who is Mr. Havers? Was he an alien?”

I need a break from the aliens. Suzie hasn’t shut up about it since the Havers visit. I’m off to the restroom despite not needing the facilities. After I re-do my make-up and wash my hands, I check my phone. There’s a message from an unknown number.

I’m off to chase a skip. Make sure to let the vets watch out for you

Huh? Who is this?

Ryker

Why is Ryker texting me? And how did he get my number? And who does he think he is?

I can take care of myself

I send the message and switch off my phone. First, he barges in on my self-defense class and now he steals my phone number and orders me around. I don’t care how many tingles I get when the man touches me. I am done with men who order me around.

When I exit the woman’s restroom, Wally is waiting on me. Of course, he is.

“What’s up, Wally?” I pretend to be clueless and bat my eyelashes for good measure.

He tags me around my neck and pulls me close. “There’s no need to be brave in front of us. We’re here if you need us.” He waits on my nod before continuing. “Anything you need, kid. All you have to do is ask.”

My eyes sting and I have to blink fast before tears fall. I have never had anyone I could rely on before. It’s almost too good to be true. Please be true.
