“Here’s the deal. I will give you some money to tide you over.”
“I’ll pay you back. I promise.”
He holds up his hand. “This is not a loan. This is me investing in your future.” When I open my mouth to protest, he shakes his hand. “No, Phoebe. These are my terms. Take it or leave it.”
I nod. I can hardly leave it.
“And I will ensure you pass your background check.” I release the breath I was holding. Thank goodness. “But if I think you are in any danger, then I will not only tell the others, but I will not hesitate to step in and take care of things.”
“I’m not in danger,” I insist.
“And I need to know your real name.”
My eyes widen. “Why?”
“Kid, I’m not making sure you can pass a background check without checking your real background.”
Darn. He has a point. “It’s Abbot.”
“Thank you.”
“Why are you thanking me? I’m the one who’s thankful.” Hailey’s uncles are confusing.
“Thank you for trusting me.” He stands. “Now, wait here. I’ll get you some cash.”
I watch as he strolls out of the room. I can’t believe he’s going to help me. And he’s going to keep my secret. It’s okay, Phoebe. Everything is going to be okay.
