The phone rings as I’m texting my response. I don’t look at the caller ID. Big mistake.

“Princess.”

I jolt upright and start running to the front door of the apartment. “I’m not your princess and you need to leave me alone.”

“I screwed up.”

“You screwed up?” I hiss. “How? You underestimated the uncles?”

“I should have never taken the job for your husband.”

“I don’t have a husband,” I growl. Why am I talking to Ryker? I am done with him. “Leave me alone or I’ll tell the uncles you’re bothering me.”

“I need to tell you something.”

Suzie isn’t the only one who’s curious. “Then tell me.”

“Not over the phone. You need to hear this in person.”

In person? Yeah, right. “I may be blonde, but I’m not completely stupid. I’m not giving you another chance to take me back to Theodore. Call me again and I will tell the uncles.”

“Pri—”

I don’t hear the rest of what he has to say because I hang up. My heart is pounding, and my hands are shaking. I collapse on a kitchen chair and lay my head on the table.

When will this be over? Will Theodore ever let me go? Maybe I should move to another country. Canada is supposed to be nice. I’m sure I can find some isolated village somewhere. Somewhere a snake in the mud bounty hunter would be noticed the minute he showed up.

I still have some jewelry I can sell. Jewelry I’ve been holding on to for a rainy day. Well, guess what, it’s pouring outside. I stand and go in search of my laptop. Time to research and make a plan.
