Chapter 26

A lady never reveals her secrets, but I’m no lady. ~ Phoebe’s rules for becoming a better person

“Oh, look, someone’s allowed inside the office today. What’s changed?” Suzie wiggles her eyebrows.

I don’t bother responding to her. No doubt she has already heard from the uncles and Pops about last night. Those men gossip worse than old ladies.

“Ignore her,” I tell Ryker who has followed me to the office.

Ryker was waiting for me when I walked out of the apartment above McGraw’s Pub this morning. He didn’t say a word, merely opened the passenger door to his truck, and waited for me to make my own decision.

Since it’s freezing outside with the wind whipping off the lake, it was an easy decision to make. It had nothing to do with how sexy the man looked in his ripped jeans and long-sleeved t-shirt stretched over the muscles of his chest. Nothing at all.

Lola comes barreling out of Hailey’s office. Her hind legs slide out from under her as she takes the corner, but she doesn’t slow down. She jumps up on me and starts loving on me.

“Down!” At Ryker’s command, Lola drops into a sitting position. “Basket.” He points in the direction of Hailey’s office.

Lola whines once and then trots away.

I gape at the big bad bounty hunter with my mouth hanging open.

“What can I say? Dogs love me.”

I laugh at his use of my words against me.

Suzie raises her hand. “I vote he can stay.”

“Too bad klutzy girls don’t get votes.”

“I’m not a klutz,” she mumbles, but I’ve seen the proof. I know the truth.

Hailey walks out of her office with her hair a mess and her lips swollen. Aiden swaggers out behind her with a smirk on his face.

I raise an eyebrow at Suzie. “You didn’t stop them?”

“I’m not a cockblocker.”

Aiden snorts. “Sure, you aren’t.” He kisses Hailey on the forehead, does a chin lift in Ryker’s direction, and takes off.

Suzie crosses her arms over her chest. “If this office is becoming the love shack, I’m not sure I want to work here anymore.”

Hailey rumples her hair. “You’re the one who pushed us together. You reap what you sow.”

“What’s on the agenda for today?” Ryker is obviously done listening to our joking around.

“Well, we were going to talk about you and Pheebs all day, but now you’ve gone and ruined all our fun.” Suzie pouts.

“I told you not to call me Pheebs.”

“Sorry. Not sorry. Phoebe is a stuck-up bitch. Since you’re no longer a stuck-up bitch, I’ve hereby renamed you Pheebs.”

I have no words. Luckily, Hailey does. “I need your help with an insurance case if you’re up for it.”

Why wouldn’t I be up for it? “Sure, let’s go.”

Suzie claps. “And I get to play with Lola all day.”

“And do the accounts.” Hailey reminds her.
