“I think maybe we should go back now. We got far enough today.”

She doesn’t question me. She turns quickly on her heels and tries to steady the speed of her pace as she follows the path we made through the snow.

Yup, terrified.

I’m fine with her walking in front of me though. Gives me the opportunity to look around and behind us without freaking her out some more. I keep telling myself that I don’t care how scared she is, but I do.Fuck it, I do.

Mostly because it’s not the same as the fear she has for me. No, she is terrified of that motherfucker, Adrien, and I’m not having any of that.

Some would see this as jealousy, I see it as my fucking territory.

It takes us less time to get back to the house. Partly because the path through the snow is already made, but mostly because she’s been walking so much faster, ready to go back to shelter.

Once inside, I can see her shoulders drop, her breathing relaxes and I’m not sure how I feel about her viewing my house as a safe place.

Her safe place…

I shake my head, close the door behind me and lock it. I go to the fireplace, light a fire and she follows, kneeling in front of it.

I want to turn around. I want to look at her. I want to admire that porcelain skin touched by the warm light of the fire; I want to see the flames reflect in the bright green of her eyes.

But I hold my ground.

We just sit here, both of us on our knees, watching the enthralling dance of the flames. There’s solace here, a comfort I’ve never experienced before. With anyone…

I exhale, my muscles relax… the monster lurking behind my demons smiles.
