I can hear his heavy footsteps behind me, he is not hunting me like he did that night when I escaped. No. He is chasing me like the terrible beast he is, and he is not hiding behind trees anymore.

My lungs are burning from the cold, my thighs and calves are getting tight from the strain, and I’m running aimlessly through the dark forest. Everything around me looks the same, no hiding spot, no nothing. The only chance I have to veer him off my tracks is if I fall through a damn hole in the ground.

My brain goes on overdrive, tears filling my eyes at the prospect of being caught yet again by him. I have nowhere to go, no matter how fast I run, there’s nowhere for me to hide.

When I hear Adrien’s heavy steps getting closer, I’m not sure if I have been running for minutes or hours. I feel him behind me. My steps are smaller, slower now, and no matter how much I push myself… I cannot outrun him. I am not giving up, but the terrain is harsh and moving through the high snow is burning me out.

All of a sudden I feel his body heat and I know that I am no match. If I had a weapon I would have had a chance… but just me, on my own…

Fear fills my veins, replacing the blood that keeps me alive, terror covers my skin in millions of little goosebumps, panic fills my throat, and with one deep breath I scream.

I scream from the depths of my lungs as hard and as loud as my throat can take it.

I scream because I know… He will hear me, and he will come.

I did not get to finish that thought before Adrien catches my loose hair in his hand and pulls me back so violently, I stumble backwards, falling back first on the forest floor, the wind snapping right out of me.

He pulls my hair again, and I hear a loud bang before I realize that was the sound of my skull hitting the ground.

Everything goes black.
