“Looks to me like you screwed a Navy SEAL and a MARSOC Scout Sniper totally and completely unconscious.” He glanced down for a moment, checking a jet-black wrist-watch. “Usually this time of morning they’re out running their fourth or fifth mile.”

I couldn’t tell if he was annoyed or jealous or outright impressed. Maybe a little of all three.

“Get dressed,” Santiago said simply. “You and I need to go for a ride.”

SANTIAGO

She stayed silent for most of the ride, well past our stop for coffee and down into Fitchburg. She looked comfortable too, casually chewing one finger while staring out at the orange sky. Probably more comfortable than she ought to be, considering the circumstances.

“So, do we have a destination in mind?”

Maybe she was waiting for me to start things up, but I wasn’t interested in talking. Not right now, anyway. Instead I sipped my coffee and followed the road.

“Okaaaay…”

Still without an answer, Brynne sighed and put one foot up on the dash. I couldn’t help but notice how beautiful she was. It was a natural beauty too. The kind that came without makeup, or lip-fillers, or any of the other usual California bullshit.

Damn. Look at her.

Alright fine, maybe she was gorgeous. Long dark hair, olive-Italian skin. It wasn’t exactly a surprise, finding her in bed with Silas or Cody. But discovering her naked betweenbothof them, well, that had been quite an amusing little shock.

She’s not like other girls, that’s for sure.

No, she most definitely was not. Brynne turned out to be a lot bolder and more confident than I’d initially given her credit for. She was also apparently very resourceful, having tracked us down so quickly with virtually nothing to go on.

But then came my abrupt departure to Mexico, which didn’t leave me with much time to feel her out. The others had taken care of her in my absence though. In more ways than one.

I proceeded south, rolling slowly through the heart of town. After twisting through a few lefts and rights, I finally arrived at my destination.

“Recognize this place?”

It was the first thing I’d said to her since the apartment. She shook her head.

“You sure? Look around.”

Brynne’s face took on a look of genuine curiosity. Even so, she did what was asked of her, panning her head left and right.

“I’ve never been here before,” she said sullenly. “Definitely not to this street, and never this part of town.”

I nodded to indicate I’d heard her, then killed the engine. For a minute we sat there wordlessly, the heated engine ticking beneath the hood in the early morning silence.

“So are we gonna talk about it?” she asked.

Now it was my turn to sigh. “Talk about what?”

“Last night. Me and the guys.”

Her eyes scanned me carefully, trying to gauge my reaction. Not the reaction on my face, which hadn’t changed, but the true feelings I might be harboring just beneath.

In truth though, I had no feelings.

“Are you mad?” Brynne asked.

Again, I didn’t answer.

“Angry at them? Angry at me?”
