“What happens when the Ancellas do come up?” I asked. “You still haven’t told me. I’ve asked over and over what the plan is, but none of you will give me the details.”

My three strapping lovers exchanged silent glances, the way they so often did. They spoke without speaking, and that part made me jealous. Their connection was so strong, they’d been around each other for so many years, they could communicate a thousand thoughts without uttering a single word.

“We’ll get the call when they’re ready to meet,” Silas explained. “They pick the spot. They pick the time.”

“I thought we had a couple days left?”

Santiago shrugged. “Who knows? The cartel moves at its own speed, and that speed is tempered by caution. They’re not going to adhere to some rigid schedule. And they’re certainly not going to telegraph their movements.”

“Anyway,” Silas went on, “we’ll meet up with them once they’ve verified Evan is there too. And that’s it. We’ll go and get him, and send him back here to you—”

“Back here to me?” I blinked. “Are you serious?”

The boys collectively said nothing.

“You don’t think I’m going to sit at home, do you? While you’re meeting a Mexican drug cartel to negotiate my brother’s freedom?”

“Brynne,” Santiago said sternly. “Be reasonable.”

“Yeah!” I scoffed, not even caring what it looked like anymore. “Because being reasonable has worked out so well for me so far.”

I shook my head in disappointment, then grabbed my keys and headed toward the door. The key-grabbing had been pure habit, really. I didn’t even have a car, and that part only made me feel more stupid.

“Brynne, please don’t go.”

“Why?” I laughed. “Is it ‘too dangerous’ to go outside?” I jerked a thumb over my shoulder. “Should I run back there and hide under one of the beds?”

With that I swept past them through the doorway. As I climbed the steps leading to street level they guys didn’t say anything at all. They didn’t try to stop me, either.

To their credit, it was a smart move on their part.

SILAS

I found her drenched in sweat, at the far corner of the gym’s weight room. She was at the cable machine, doing tricep presses. The muscles in her bare arms looked firm and sexy with each smooth, downward extension.

“Hey beautiful.”

She ignored me, continuing her set. Her shoulders were already pumped. Her calves and glutes too, so I guessed she’d been running incline.

“Do you come here often?”

Brynne’s mouth remained frozen in what was almost a frown. She glanced up at me in the mirror, her eyes all fierce and fiery, but only for a split second.

“Who tipped you off?” she asked. “Maya?”

“Jonas, actually.”

The security guard had made the call apprehensively, and only because they were locking up for the night. She’d asked him to leave the keys and he had. But not before calling us.

Brynne finished her set and let the bar go, which intentionally slammed the weights back against the rest of the stack. I offered her a clean towel and she snatched it from my hands.

“No slamming weights,” I teased. “Those are the rules.”

“Yeah? Sue me.”

“Just saying…” I put my hands up defensively. “You could get banned from the club for this type of—”
