He made a grand gesture with both arms, presenting himself like the prize on some forgotten game show.

“Ah yes,” I smirked broadly, taking the last pull from my bottle. “Here you are.”

A long moment passed, and I took the opportunity to look straight into his eyes and stare him down. Not used to being challenged, he eventually looked away.

“Only you’re obviously not the man I’m looking for,” I sighed.

The guy seated across from me took an emboldening first sip of his drink. “Baby, I can be whoever youneedme to be.”

“Yes, but you’re not Aiden, are you?”

His facade had more cracks in it with every passing second. Somehow though, he was still playing the game.

“And how do you know that?”

“Well for one I’m already bored,” I told him truthfully. “I haven’t technically met Aiden yet, but his text-messages have been far from boring.”

“Yes, well I can be—”

“And two,” I interjected, nodding over his shoulder, “I’m pretty sure he’s standing right behind you.”

I let my eyes wander upward, to where the man I’d obviously been texting now stood. He was atleastsix-foot two if not taller, with floppy dark hair and wild blue eyes. He sported a roguishly handsome smile as he brought one finger to his lips and dropped his opposite hand onto the man’s shoulder.

“Hey buddy.”

The guy seated across from me whirled around so fast it was actually impressive. His expression was that of having seen a ghost.

“I’m pretty sure you’re in my seat.”

It took my would-be suitor only a second or two to recover his swagger. Glancing up at the newcomer, he smirked. “Sorrybuddy,” he scoffed mockingly, “but you’re a little late to this party. Maybe run off and find your own lady?”

“Oh?” The man standing behind him seemed amused. “So it’s like that, huh?”

“Yeah, it’s exactly like that,” my guest sneered. “The two of us were just having a conversation.”

I let out a chuckle. I couldn’t help it. “Is that what it was?”

He turned and looked back at me, betrayed. Whatever was left of his shattered confidence was now waning.

“I’ll ask once more politely,” said the other man. “Please get up?”

My guest’s face was drawn with all new conflict — pride duking it out with common sense. The battle might take minutes. Hours. Days…

“Okay then.”

In one quick motion the newcomer bent his knees and picked up the man seated across from me, chair and all. He scrambled to keep his balance by gripping the wooden base, as the newcomer set him down a few feet away in front of an adjacent, empty table. It would’ve been hilarious, if it hadn’t happened so quickly. I was left sitting there in almost as much astonishment as my newly-located, would-be suitor.

“Sorry I’m a little late,” the newcomer said, grabbing an empty chair and sliding into it. “Have you been waiting long?”

“All my life,” I smiled.

“I’m Aiden.”

He extended one big hand and I shook it, noting its warmth.

“Jordyn.”

“Nice to finally meet you Jordyn,” he said, returning my smile.
