“We should probably leave now then,” he sighed. “Agreed?”

“Agreed,” I said with relief.

He pulled me even closer, squeezing my hand tightly but still gently. His palm felt warm and comforting against mine.

“I’ll tell the desk to hail us a cab then,” Connor grinned. “Only one thing to do after that.”

“Which would be?”

“Cross our fingers,” Connor snickered. “And let’s hope you drank enough coffee to fly us home.”

Twelve

JORDYN

“And so what did you kids do while we were gone?” asked Aiden cheerfully. He twisted the cap from a fresh beer and sank into the couch, all in one motion, as Connor and I stared back at him.

“Movie night,” we both said at exactly the same time.

Aiden sighed, wriggling his toes in his black socks as he put his feet up on the coffee table. He eyed us skeptically. “Movie night…”

“Yes.”

“He didn’t make you watch The Molly Maguires, did he?”

I shook my head as Connor casually flipped his friend off.

“What did you watch then?”

My heart, which was already pounding, suddenly threatened to burst out of my chest. Instead of answering, I turned to Connor for help.

“Casino,” he said quickly.

“Jeeze,” Aiden grunted. “Thatmovie?” He took an extended pull from his beer. “It’s like three hours long.”

“Sure fucken is,” said Connor bitterly. “You Americans can’t tell a simple story without always winding it out. Seemed like it would never end,” he grunted, jerking a thumb my way. “She fell asleep.”

“And you probably switched right over to soccer,” Aiden laughed.

“If you meanfootball, yes,” he snapped. “Manchester United was playing. Wrecked West Ham. Maguire was absolutely deadly.”

Aiden let his head roll back and his eyes close, allowing me to relax as he seemed to believe our little white lie. I hated lying in the first place, though. There was no real reason not to tell him where we’d gone. It wasn’t like we’d done anything wrong.

Well… almost anything.

For the past twelve or more hours, I’d done my best to push thoughts of our kiss out of my head. It wasn’t easy. I hadn’t been kissed that well in a long time, and I couldn’t remember it ever happening with a guy so well-built and gorgeous-looking.

And sweet. And kind. And—

Jordyn, stop!

It was like I had a devil on one shoulder, and an admonishing angel on the other. They were at war with each other now, because while the angel wanted to keep everything strictly business, the devil saw no reason whatsoever why I shouldn’t keep daydreaming about Connor’s hot mouth against mine.

The rest of the evening had been innocent enough, and I was proud of that part at least. After flying back and returning the aircraft, we’d driven home and each crashed out in our respective beds. We’d spent most of the day sleeping, then woken up and showered just in time for the others to come home.

“If anyone was deadly yesterday it was Elliot,” Aiden said, looking up again. “You should’ve seen him at the negotiation table.”

Connor nodded approvingly. “He really gave it em’, eh?”
