“And what about—”

“Neither could Meghan,” I jumped in. Lowering my head, I looked at the floor. “Or Carmen.”

“Wow, really?” asked Devin

“Yeah.”

“They ditched out onthis?”

I sighed exhaustedly and nodded my head. “Look, it’s a long story. They were all supposed to be here. Instead it’s just… well…”

“It’s just you.”

“Yes.”

Devin stared back a me with those stunning blue eyes for a few moments longer. Then his shoulders went soft, almost in apology.

“Sorry, Brooke. That sucks.”

“Yeah, it sure does.”

I stared blankly at him for a moment, before abruptly remembering something.

“Okay, we had a falling out then,” Reese said, shrugging a pair of bulging shoulders. “Is that what you want to hear?”

His slight-but-sexy accent cued me in. I remembered him more distinctly now — the country boy of the group. He’d grown up in the Ozarks, somewhere out in Missouri.

“It’s better,” I said, pointing a finger at him. “But Istillneed to know what happened in that taxi…”

The taxi. Holy shit, I’d almost forgotten about thetaxi! And how could I? It was quite probably the most infamous scene in the history of the Race.

My nakedness occurred to me again, so I excused myself into the bedroom and threw on a pair of shorts and the first T-shirt I could find. By the time I returned, Devin and Reese were exploring the living area and the quaint little kitchen. Hayden was on the other side of the room, talking into his phone.

“We’ll get this straightened out,” said Devin, smiling warmly.

I nodded, smiling back.

“I’m sure they just—”
