I saw Devin’s gaze shift to his friends. Reese’s body language changed abruptly.

“Get ready…” Noah cried, crouching down and extending one arm. “Get set…”

My body began tingling at the familiar catch-phrase. My heart was already pounding in anticipation, although I had no idea why.

“Because the Insane World Race Second Chance Champions starts…”

He dropped his arm, excitedly pumping the fist at the end of it.

“NOW!”

All at once the lights blinked off. The boom mics slowly dropped, as the cameras ceased filming.

“Again?” someone asked.

“Nah, that should do it,” someone else called out. “Let’s get to the next location.”

There was another jumble of movement as the crewmembers faded away, filing through the doorway. One of them was using hand signals to lead the others.

“Noah?”

Devin had stepped up for our group, his expression still incredulous. The host of the show grinned and extended a hand, and he shook it mechanically.

“Sorry about doing it this way,” Noah explained, “but this whole thing had to be a surprise. We’re putting together an impact montage. Clips of every team’s reaction to—”

“What the hell wasthat?”Reese demanded, still squinting from the brightness of the lights. “What’s going on? What are you even doing here!”

Noah’s grin twisted into something sardonic. “He really doesn’t get it?”

Hayden shook his head. In my lover’s defense, neither did I.

“I don’t know that any of us really understands what--”

“It’s about the Second Chance Champions!” Noah cried excitedly. “We’re taking the best second and third place teams from all different seasons of the Insane World Race and running them against each other to see who comes out on top. It’s something we’ve been planning for ten years now, since the show’s inception.”

“Which teams are you talking about?” Hayden demanded.

“Everyone who’s anyone,” said Noah. The host’s smile remained larger than life. “They’re all here now, ready to race. Some of them might notknowit yet, but…”

“Here?”I asked incredulously. “On the island? In Mo’orea?”

Noah’s quick-moving eyes darted my way. He looked me up and down, considering me for a moment before grinning.

“What part of ‘now’ didn’t you understand?”
