“So does the rest of the world,” said Hayden.
“Care to come clean?” I huffed.
A few long seconds passed. The only sound was our feet hitting the pavement.
“C’mon,” I urged, “we’re partners now. We’re race-buddies. We’re lovers.”
“All true,” said Reese.
“I need to know what kind of fight ends up costing a million dollars.”
My query was greeted by even more grim silence. Eventually Reese and Hayden looked to their friend. It was almost like they were seeking permission. Devin’s face was stoic, though. Unfazed.
“Get to the end with us,” said Devin, matter-of-factly. “Reach the final.”
“And then?”
His eyes locked on mine. They looked physically exhausted, but there was still a fire burning behind them.
“Then we’ll tell you.”
