For a second I thought he might shake his head and lie. Instead he only lowered his chin slightly, before finally nodding.

“Yes.”

“Don’t be,” I told him. “This will be over soon enough, and we’ll get back there and straighten everything out.”

For a second or two he didn’t catch what I’d said. Then his eyes went wide.

“We?”

I shrugged the shoulder I wasn’t lying on. “Sure. Why not?”

“Really?” he asked hopefully. “You’ll come?”

“Well I’ve always wanted to see Minnesota,” I said matter of factly. “Besides, I didn’t want to disappoint you boys. All three of you have extended an invite at one time or another.”

Devin’s eyes softened. I could see the joy in them now, the glimmer of hope.

“Besides,” I went on, “I’m pretty damned good at most of the ‘adventure’ stuff you’re doing up there. I’d come in handy.”

“I’ll bet you would,” said Devin, and I knew he meant every word.

“But there’s something else too,” I said. “One other reason reason why you shouldn’t be worried about your company at all.”

He eyed me skeptically. “And why’s that?”

“Because I’m telling you right now,” I said, my voice going suddenly low and deadly serious. As he stared back at me I pulled our sleeping bags all the way up, over our heads, and whispered: “We’re gonna win this whole fucking thing.”

With that, I slid into his arms and kissed him. I did it slowly, sensually, probing his tongue with mine. Our lips rolled softly against one another’s as I whimpered into his mouth, but only just loud enough that the sound would exist nowhere but in our cozy, darkened world.

“Mmmmm…”

My moan was more of a vibration, a release of pent-up affection and intimacy that I couldn’t possibly hold back. And I could feel Devin’s passion as well, as his body slid into mine. His hands gripped my hips so hard I knew he was struggling for control, even as his sweet tongue glided into my mouth.

Oh. My. God.

It was hard to stay on our own sides of the ice bed. Vaguely, in the back of my head, I tried to be mindful of what our silhouette might look like on camera.

“We’re going towin,” I reiterated between kisses, “and when we do, the problems you’re worrying about will all go away. Between you and Hayden and Reese, three million will go a long way toward building the greatest adventure camp in all of Minnesota.”

He kissed me harder, faster, as the hands on my body became more insistent. My own palms were wrapped around the upper portion of his two big arms. I could feel them flexing and unflexing as he tried to regain any semblance of willpower.

“What?” I teased him for his silence. “Nothing to say?”

“We never talk about winning,” he murmured.

“Why not?”

“We don’t want to jinx it.”

I shook my head and giggled. “You athletes are so superstitious. You really think—”

“Yes,” Devin said firmly, and perhaps not so quietly. “We do.”

His eyes caught mine and I held his gaze, remaining silent as we lay there staring. Our noses still touched. With the rise and fall of every hot breath, our lips grazed each other’s lightly.

“There are only four other teams left,” I whispered. “We’ll run them down. We’ll eliminate them all, and we’ll walk out of here champions.”

Devin’s eyes were pleading now. They were either pleading for me to stop, or he was pleading with himself not to dare evendreamof the Race’s outcome.

“I’m not telling you this because I hope it happens,” I said with confidence. “I’m telling you because Iknowit.”

With air running out quickly, I poked my head back up and into the ice-bedroom. The blast of icy cold air hit me like someone dropped a cinder-block on my lungs.

“Little spoon or big spoon?” I threw back at him with a giggle.

And with that Devin turned his back to the camera and molded his hot, hard body perfectly into mine.
