“Plus we have the badass bitch, so…”

The knot in my stomach twisted again, as my eyes scanned the room. Most teams had already filed out, in preparation for the final start. I couldn’t see the guys anymore. It was making me nervous, in more ways than one.

“I have to go,” I told Meghan abruptly. “I need to get ready for—”

“I got it,” Meghan smiled. “Go on, get out of here! And become a millionaire tonight, okay? We only get ten-percent of yourwinnings, so you’d better win.”

I grabbed her on a whim, hugging her so tightly I actually felt her spine crack. Meghan laughed, accusing me of trying to sabotage her team. Then she skipped off, leaving me standing there all alone.

Carmen’s still pissed.

I’d have to fix things with her right away. Of the three friendships I’d forged last Race, Carmen was the one I valued most. I could understand her feeling betrayed after finding out I’d been secretly racing for the last several weeks. All without her.

Before I could take a step in any particular direction, a tap on the shoulder spun me around. I turned… and came almost nose-to-nose with a grinning face.

“Well hey, look who it is!” I heard Melissa’s holier-than-thou voice declare abruptly. The smile plastered across her face dripped with superiority. “It’s the new me.”
