“Demarco’s in,” said Julius. “Okeyo too, because he knows the region.”

“Both are good choices,” I agreed. “They keep their heads down.”

“I wanted to send Sondo, but he’s still on deployment. Arrigo too. Nelson’s somewhere in South America, and Griffin’s nursing a fractured leg. So that leaves…”

“Gibson and Vasquez,” I finished.

Julius nodded somberly. “Or one ofus.”

I let his words echo through the empty office for a moment. There was a time when the idea of jumping on a plane and shooting off on a mission like this would’ve thrilled and excited me. Hell, I would’ve volunteered way before now, even.

But now…

Now I had reasons to stay. The twins. The house. And all of a sudden, something else, too.

Someoneelse, rather.

Shit.

“Let’s run it past the others,” I told him. “See how it resonates with each of them.”

Julius scratched his chin. He looked back at me with the same knowing look I was trying to avoid.

“If you’re asking if I’m sitting this one out, the answer is no,” I told him. “But I’m not immediately jumping through hoops either. Let’s see what the young guns say. They need to be briefed before they can make any kind of decision, too.”

“Way ahead of you,” my friend replied. “They’re on their way here now, so it’s gonna be a late one. Nelson’s bringing a pizza, in case you’re hungry.”

By the time Julius was finished talking I was already staring into my phone, typing away.

“What are you doing?”

“Messaging Nelson,” I replied nonchalantly. “Telling him to make it two pizzas. At least.”
