“Yes,” all three of us said at once.

She bit her lip. “That shouldn’t betoohard to pull off, I guess. Especially for just one person, over a single night.”

The others exchanged sideways glances with me. Glances that were awkward enough to notice.

“What?”

“Well, like I said the whole thing snowballed,” I confessed. “The general likes to talk, and for some reason he likes to talk me up.”

“So?”

“So people over me, people under me, my entire company…”

“Just about everybody on the joint base thinks this guy is recently married,” Aurelius finished for me. “He made up a weddinganda honeymoon. He even wears a ring.”

Sheepishly, I held up my left hand. The simple gold band that still felt so alien on my finger glinted playfully in the dying light.

“Well then I guess congratulations are in order,” Dakota declared, taking a long, casual pull of her coffee. She stared back at me again with those big blue eyes, and her mouth curled into a sardonic smile.

“I sure hope our honeymoon was a good one.”
