“Buy you a drink, beautiful?”

I’d already ordered, but that didn’t stop him. A clean-cut man slid into the seat on my left, flashing me an overconfident smile. He was dressed in the standard service uniform for the US Navy. So was half the bar.

“Sorry bud,” I heard another voice say. “This one’s withme.”

I turned, and was greeted by Merrick’s chestnut brown eyes and warm smile. My would-be suitor appeared dejected and for a moment, almost challenging. After giving my friend a second look however, he bowed out.

“You’re going to get circled by sharks in a place like this,” Merrick quipped, looking around. “Squids and grunts everywhere, jarheads too. Comes with the territory.”

My drink arrived. I picked it up. “So you’re here to rescue me?”

“Well Iama Combat Rescue pilot,” he smirked. “But no, Jace sent me to pick you up. I was on my way to the elevator when I saw you here.”

“Ah,” I said, admiring his V-shaped body through his jumpsuit. “I see. Can I finish this first?”

“Sure can. I’ll even join you.”

He pointed, and the bartender poured him a draft. As he wrapped an oversized hand around it, I raised my drink to toast him.

“To the most beautiful place I’ve ever been,” I smiled.

Our eyes met in the middle of toasting, causing our glasses to clink together musically.

“Just got a littlemorebeautiful,” Merrick winked at me smoothly.
