She was staring at me unabashedly, totally unfazed. I had to give her credit.

“Actually, you have,” I admitted. “But there are a couple of reasons hecan’tlike you. Very good ones.”

There was a moment of silence as she stared straight ahead, numbly.

“It’s because I’m Tyler’s sister.”

“That’s one for sure,” I told her truthfully. “You don’t go messing around with your best friend’s sister, at least not without his blessing.”

She nodded, seeming to understand and accept this. Shoving her empty glass away, she looked up at me.

“What’s the other reason?”

I froze again, and this time it was a little more obvious. For several long moments, I was a drowning man scrambling for flotsam.

“Merrick?”

I stood up abruptly, shaking my head. “C’mon,” I told her. “I’ve already said too much.”

“But you haven’t said anything!”

“Yeah, and that’s probably for the best,” I smiled, tipping the bartender. “I’ve always had a pretty big mouth. That’s why I fly choppers instead of working in Intelligence.”

“But—”

Her sentence died as I reached for her hand, pulling her in the direction of the exit.

“You hungry?” I called back.

“I—I guess so,” Dakota admitted.

“Good,” I told her. “When we get back to the house, I’m gonna need you to help me talk Aurelius out of ordering pizza.”
