Gulping hard I downed the rest of my latest drink — the second such cocktail handed to me by Merrick. He was doing his best not to look stunned from his position behind the bar. Neither he nor Aurelius were doing a good job, though.

“Weird,” said Annie, still staring. “We’ve served with Jace for more than a year now, and until recently he’s never even mentioned you.”

“That’s funny,” I shot back. “He’s never mentioned you, either.”

I let my eyes shift over to Zach, who by this point looked utterly miserable. Whatever shit his wife was trying to pull, he didn’t seem to be all that sold on it.

“You know babe,” I yawned, “I’m getting sleepy. Wanna take me to bed?”

Jace squeezed me possessively with the flex of one big arm. I had to admit it felt amazing.

“Yeah,” he agreed. “Let’s go up. I’m tired too.”

He broke away from me, but only long enough to show our guests the door. They hadn’t yet finished their drinks, but Aurelius plucked them from their outstretched fingers anyway.

“Always nice to have you guys over,” Jace muttered, a little sarcastically. “We’ll have to do it again sometime.”

The door closed behind Zach and Annie, and for a few long seconds, silence reigned. The only sound was the constant patter of the rain outside.

“That was… pretty convincing,” said Merrick.

Aurelius scratched at his chin. “Yeah. No shit.”

I was still a little woozy. Some of it was from the drinks, but a lot of it had to do with everything that else transpired.

My God. Just look at them.

Much of it was because of Merrick, with his boulder-like shoulders and whiskey brown eyes. It was Aurelius too, his long, lean body stretching his much-too-tight T-shirt over a full set of scrumptious-looking abs.

And of course it was Jace, looking more like a dark, dangerous stranger than the innocent boy I once crushed on throughout my sophomore year. Jace, who’d brought me here to play the part of his wife.

Jace, who so thoroughly kissed me…

Or did you kiss him?

I sank into the nearest couch cushion, not even sure anymore. The music started up again. The room filled with warmth, camaraderie, fun.

“Got any more of these?” I asked, holding my empty glass out.

The three handsome grins spreading across their faces were all the answer I needed.
