Now my whole family was back in the ‘motherland’ — a place I only vaguely remember. As it turned out, it was a place they couldn’t resist. A place they still somehow expected me to return to, once I finish my service, of course…

“Hey.”

I pulled up to the curb and she was already there, looking bright and alive and heartbreakingly beautiful. With her wet hair pulled up into a makeshift bun I got an even better look at the high cheekbones of her lovely, porcelain face. Her stark blue eyes, accented by fresh eye-shadow, were almost cat-like in their femininity.

“Nowwill you tell me where we’re going?” she asked again. I noticed she was still clutching the mug from the kitchen.

“Well first,” I took the mug and dumped it unceremoniously over my shoulder, “we’re stopping to get much better coffee than this whipped foam crap. Jace has gonewayoverboard with that latte machine.”

That reaction drew a short, musical laugh. “Seems like a good start.”

“And then,” I smiled back at her, “I’m taking you dress shopping for tonight.”

Her well-manicured eyebrows came together. “But I alreadyhavea dress for tonight.”

“That black thing we found hanging in your hotel room?”

She stared back at me wordlessly.

“Yeah, that’s okay for a funeral maybe, but not for the officer’s ball.”
