“Sounds good so far.”

“Then we all throw on Santa hats and do a good old American bar crawl, playing whatever games we find in the pubs along the way.”

I pictured a dozen or more men like Aurelius stumbling happily from bar to bar, each with a beautiful wife or girlfriend on his arm. It sounded fantastic.

“Could I go wearing this?” I pointed again.

“Are you kidding?” he laughed. “I’d take youanywherein that dress!”

I spent the next few minutes in the dressing room, trying it on. I couldn’t help thinking about what it would be like to wear it out, surrounded by deadly warriors sporting festive Santa hats. Boisterous warriors who were most likely drunk. Throwing darts. Playing pool…

But mostly, I thought about what it would be like to wear it for Aurelius.

The dress was daring, scorching hot, totally sexy. Rather than step out into the shop’s main floor, I pulled him into the dressing room instead.

“What do you think?”

I was standing there looking into the mirror, with Aurelius just behind me. He’d pulled the door to the dressing room closed behind him.

“I think you’re the hottest fucking thing on two feet.”

He took another step closer, until our bodies were practically touching. I could feel his heat now, smell the sweet, minty scent of his hot breath. The big SEAL towered over me, but he bent forward just enough so that his face protruded past my left shoulder.

“It’s a shame you’re off-limits,” he whispered softly. “A travesty, really.”

He brushed against me from behind, either intentionally or not. Cold shivers ran down my body from head to toe, followed immediately by hot tingles.

“W—Who says I’m off-limits?”

The words just sort of spilled out. They caught in my throat on the way past my lips, that’s how dry everything was.

“Well, for one thing you’re Jace’s girl,” he said with a hint of genuine sadness. “And before you try to tell me you aren’t, you’llalwaysbe Jace’s girl.”

Aurelius stood tall again. Clearing his throat, he let out a long, wistful sigh.

“So what’s the other thing?” I asked.

I locked eyes with him in the mirror. This time I wouldn’t let him go.

“Merrick already told me there’s a reason Jacecan’thave me, and it had nothing to do with my brother.” I whirled to face him. “Is this the same reason?”

He paused. “Merrick really said that, huh?”

“He sure did.”

Aurelius shook his head slowly. “Well Merrick always did have a big mouth. That’s why he’s not in Intelligence. As a matter of fact, he once—”

“Forget all that,” I cut in. “Come on, tell me. What’s this big secret?”

For a moment I thought he might turn away. That he might take with him any chance I had of ever knowing. But then I saw his eyes.

Oh my God…

His eyes — usually so innocent and honest — were dark and smoldering now. Those eyes were hungry. Full of lust.

“We’re looking for something specific,” he said, and his voice somehow didn’t sound like his own. “Someonespecific, really.”

“Who?”
