“I don’t know if a mermaidcanshit,” offered Jace. “Seems physiologically impossible.”

“What?” Merrick cried. “Of course they can shit!”

“Oh yeah? Have you ever seen a mermaid’s asshole?”

The chopper pilot thought for a moment. “No,” he admitted reluctantly. “I guess not, but—”

“There you go.”

I giggled, letting the boys continue their debate as to whether mermaids had ‘holes’ or not. It got pretty graphic and absurdly silly, and they took the conversation in several different directions by the time I’d finished setting up the microphone and syncing it to my laptop.

“So I can use this room?” I asked.

“Of course,” said Jace.

“Good. I’ll start tomorrow, if that’s okay. Because tonight…”

My sentence trailed off awkwardly. Aurelius picked it up however.

“Tonight,” he grinned, winking at the others. “She’s all mine.”

I watched as he ducked out of the bedroom, presumably to go get ready for our night out with the rest of his platoon. Merrick was still examining the microphone from all sides as I pulled Jace away.

“Listen,” I murmured, once we were on the other side of the bedroom. “You sure you’re okay with me going out with Aurelius for his SEALs thing tonight?” I asked. “Because if you aren’t—”

“No, no, of course I am,” he cut in. “Why wouldn’t I be?”

“Yeah, well you sort of put him off before…”

“That’s because I didn’t want to take advantage of your hospitality,” he replied. “You were already doingmea huge favor. I couldn’t ask you to do favors for my friends, too.”

“Your friends are my friends now,” I smiled. “And then some.”

“And then some,” he agreed.

I looked into his smoky grey eyes, searching for a hint of jealousy. I still couldn’t believe there wasn’t jealousy. It just didn’t make sense.

“You guys really are like brothers, aren’t you?” I asked.

Jace stood for a moment, then nodded solemnly. “More than you’ll ever know.”

“But Iwantto know,” I told him. “I… I missed out on so much with you. We lost touch for so long.”

“I know.”

“I’d love to fill in those blanks. Bridge the gap between this Jace and the old one.”

“The old one, huh?” he smiled.

“Yes,” I grinned back at him. “Old Jace was a hell of a lot of fun.”

“And new Jace isn’t fun?”

I took his hands in mine. They were so much bigger and thicker than I remembered them.

“New Jace is fun in much different ways,” I said slyly. “And trust me, it’s an improvement.”

I stood on my toes to kiss him, feeling the instant electricity as his lips crushed mine. My body reacted, melting into his arms. Pleading with him for more of last night, even though I had other plans.

“Have fun with Aurelius and his squid friends tonight,” he said with total and complete sincerity. “I’ll see you when you get back.”

“If you’re even up when I get back.”

He smiled with our lips still touching. “You don’t think a husband should wait up for his wife?”

Jace held up his hand and wriggled his ring-finger. I laughed into his mouth.

“If you do,” I whispered, kissing him again. “This wife promises to make it worth your while.”
