“You’re the only side of the fence that I want,” Brian countered.

His mouth curled into that once-charming smile I used to fall for so easily. Now it just made me sick.

“Brian go away. Enjoy your life.”

He looked down at his feet again. If the gesture was meant to garner sympathy, it wasn’t working.

“Do you really mean that?”

“Yes,” I replied. “I mean, no. I mean, I really don’t care, to be honest. I have no feelings left for you whatsoever. You can do whatever you want, it means nothing to me.”

I closed the door. Or rather, Istartedto close the door, but something stopped me.

Glancing down, I saw that he’d jammed his boot inside.

“Brian, don’t even—”

“You blocked me,” he said coldly. “You blocked my calls, my texts, my—”

“Brian, move your foot.”

My whole body was shaking by now. My voice was dripping with acid.

“No.”

A cold feeling stole over me, starting at my feet and sweeping all the way up to my shoulders. It wasn’t anger, it wasn’t rage. It was worse than either of those things.

It was total helplessness.

“Let me talk to you,” he pleaded again. “Dakota, if you just let me in and hear me out—”

“MOVE. YOUR FUCKING. FOOT.”

I shoved again, this time as hard as I could. When I looked down, Brian’s foot hadn’t moved a single centimeter. Neither had the door.

Fuck.

I wanted to call out, to scream as loud as I could. Maybe my neighbors would hear. Maybe someone would come running over.

Or maybe Brian would get desperate and push even harder, shoving his way inside…

“Dakota—”

My mind raced, trying to calculate whether I could talk my way out of this or if I should go a different, more desperate route. If I invited him in, I might be able to bullshit long enough to concoct some kind of an escape plan. But then I’d be trapped inside, and it might also go theotherway. The wrong way.

My eyes were glazed, as tears welled up. I couldn’t tell if I was actually crying or if it were just the extreme cold seeping in from outside.

“Dakota, listen—”

He pushed and the door bowed, hurting my foot. The pressure was too much. There was no way I could hold him.

And then I didn’t have to hold him, as a hand clapped itself over Brian’s shoulder and yanked him violently backwards into the frozen darkness.
