I’d wondered about some of those things myself, honestly. But I never wanted to press. I always figured Jace would tell me in time.

“If you wanted to date him, I really couldn’t stop you.”

“No,” I chuckled. “You couldn’t.”

“I wouldn’t want to anyway little sis,” he said. “Maybe when we were in high school, but not now.”

For the first time in my life I looked back at Tyler and saw someone entirely different. He was older now. A little more wrinkled around the eyes, a little bit of grey starting up here and there. But it was his personality that had changed the most. He was a lot more mature now. Much less impulsive, and more thoughtful.

“With all the moving around he’s done, I can’t imagine how such a thing would’ve worked between the two of you,” Tyler went on. “But now Jace is settling down. Carving out a place for himself.” He shrugged and smiled. “I guess when it finally comes down to it, you could definitely do worse.”

The ball was dropping now, shimmying its way down the pole at the top of the screen. Tyler and I watched it together. We listened to the roar of the crowd as they counted down the final ten seconds, until the whole thing lit up and the fireworks went off, ushering in the new year.

My brother swept me into a hug, and my eyes welled up with tears. Everything to do with Brian was wholly forgotten.

“This is going to be a hell of a kickass year,” Tyler said, toasting with his almost empty bottle.

“For the both of us,” I grinned back, as my phone went off in my pocket.
