“And ex-special forces,” she added.

I nodded. “That part certainly doesn’t hurt.”

I wanted to tell her about the contacts we’d made, the people we were already in the process of bringing on. Jace already had jobs lined up for us. Aurelius was busy working on warehouse space.

As for myself, I somehow had even more connections at NORAD than I’d bragged about, and to be honest I’d talked a big game. The contract work I could get us over at Peterson Air Force Base alone would sustain us for several years, if we needed it to. And that was just for starters.

Still, as exciting as it all was, I didn’t want to overwhelm her with too much at once. It was one of the things we’d talked about, as Jace came back from his Christmas visit. We wanted Dakota to feel welcome and relaxed. We wanted to show her a great time while she was here, and let her digest everything else at her own speed.

And of course, we allwantedher.

“So what are we doing today?” she asked sweetly, from her side of the truck.

I glanced over and my heart skipped two whole beats. Dakota had a smile that could wash away a thousand doubts, and cerulean eyes that reflected the sky. Her hair bounced gently around her gorgeous face as it cascaded downward, spilling over her shoulders like the beautiful waterfalls we’d seen on Kauai.

“Whataren’twe doing,” I grinned back, squeezing her hand as I guided us along the highway.
