“Sorry, they’re embedded in conversations,” I smirked, holding my hand out. “And you’re not seeingthose.”
Naomi pretended to keep my phone for a moment, then slid it across the table with a mock frown. “It’s because they’re dirty, aren’t they?”
“Maybe,” I chuckled. “Some.”
“Definitelysome.”
“Alright, fine.”
We’d talked about everything as usual, and for the most part I’d left nothing out. In return Naomi had detailed a lot of her own saga, including roommate problems, a lecherous boss, and a kickass opportunity to switch to a different career. I’d encouraged her to take the leap, but of course it was an easy thing for me to say. Other than her asshole boss, Naomi was comfortable where she was.
Sometimes though, comfort could be a bad thing.
“So if I come down there—”
“Whenyou come down there,” I countered with a smile. “But please. Go on.”
“Fine,” she relented. “When I come down there, you’re hooking me up with some of your boyfriends’ hot military friends, right?”
Lifting my own glass, I put on my best poker face. I hadn’ttoldher this yet, but it was a situation I’d already looked into.
“That’s a distinct possibility, yeah.”
“I mean, if you’re keeping all three of those studs to yourself,” she admonished, “the least you can do is hook a girl up with one or two—”
“Two?” I chuckled.
Naomi paused, then shrugged. “We all have fantasies, Dakota. You’re just lucky enough to live them out.”
It was a point I could never, ever argue. Not that I wanted to.
“I’m going to miss the hell out of you, Naomi. I really am.”
“Yeah,” she smiled, “well I’m just a phone call or a FaceTime away.”
“And trust me, I’ll be making those calls,” I told her. “In the meantime, save up your vacation days. And… be careful of Brian.”
It was the third time I’d told her, just tonight. Naomi smirked as she drained her drink, then clapped the glass loudly to the worn wooden table.
“I think you’ve got it backwards,” she said, with complete and total confidence. “That piece of shit should be careful ofme.”
