Chapter 12

Lacey only had a single second before Mason closed the gap and slammed his lips down upon hers, sending a blazing trail of heat over her mouth that quickly slid down, past her neck, and throughout her body.

Mason’s hands cupped her face, keeping her locked in place as his mouth set upon its quest to devour her. Lacey’s own fingers gripped the soft material of his ACDC t-shirt as her body pressed up against hers. He urged her lips apart and swept into her mouth, his tongue meeting hers in a fiery dance that sent flames searing down every nerve ending.

All logic faded with that kiss. Even with her eyes shut, the room seemed to spin, her head light with the sensations that flooded through her.

A groan slipped out of her mouth, and Mason drank it down, offering her own of his own.

She took it. She would take everything that he had to give her.

Her need for him was rising rapidly, especially when Mason’s hands slipped from her face to the back of her neck. Even without words, he was driving home the fact that she was his, that she would never be able to leave him.

Her shoulder burned, the edges of the mark he’d given to her only a short time ago warming with the pleasure coursing throughout her body. Would this happen every time he came near her, every time he kissed her? Or would they be like all married couples eventually, and lose interest in each other?

A stab of pain shot through her gut at the thought, and Lacey ripped her mouth away from his, her fingers still tight around the material they grasped.

Mason’s eyes burned down at her, blazing with heat and … understanding? “I won’t harm you, Lacey,” he whispered. “We’ll go as slow as you need, but you need to know right now. Wolves mate for life. You’re mine. Forever.”

The tone in his voice sent twin ribbons of fear and lust through her, straight down into her heart and between her thighs. She’d been promised forever nine years ago by another shifter and forever had simply been a year.

How long would Mason’s forever be? Until Sam caught up with them? He was bound to. She couldn’t imagine she was the only one on this particular job, especially since Sam liked to cover all angles.

No, there would be others out there, searching for the rightful alpha.

And she would have to tell him the truth.

Lacey groaned internally. How would she be able to explain that?

Sorry, Mason, I already know all about your world since I happened to fall in love with one of your pack about a year after you escaped but they killed him. Your uncle let me go only to hire me to track you and your sister down and let him know where you’re hiding out. But since I’m your mate, you’ll forgive me all that, right?

Yeah … she could just see that happening.

A war broke out inside Lacey’s chest, and tears began to burn in the back of her eyes once more. Her head dropped to his chest, his heartbeat sounding in her ears. Squeezing her eyes closed, she forced herself to take several deep, cleansing breaths, forcing the adrenaline in her veins to slow down.

“Sssh,” Mason whispered, his hands stroking her back as she stood there, drawing in the comfort of his body. “It’s going to be alright.”

Lacey shook her head. “No, it’s not,” she whispered back. After a long pause, she lifted her head to gaze up at him. His eyes were dark, still heated, but soft and warm all the same. “Things won’t ever be the same.

His hands tightened around her, and he planted a gentle kiss on her brow. “What happened out there …” Lacey’s gut clenched tighter as the hunter’s faces suddenly reappeared in her mind. “I wish I could kill them all again for you. I’d make it hurt, make it last longer.”

A smile danced over Lacey’s lips at the growl within his voice, the sound chasing away the images and the lustful words of her attackers. Rising on the tips of her feet, she brushed her lips across his, a featherlight touch that fluttered along her skin.

Mason kissed her back, a little hesitant at first, but as she deepened it, so did he. Those redneck bastards may have hurt her, humiliated her, but they would not stop her from living her life.

Slowly, Lacey realised her grip on his t-shirt, and wrapped her arms around his neck. She jumped up, forcing Mason to grip her jean-covered buttocks with his warm hands as her legs wound themselves around his waist.

Heat slid through her veins, this time warmer, slower, than before but still just as all-consuming. His mouth moved from her lips, trailing across the delicate skin of her neck, nibbling and tasting her pulse beneath his teeth.

“Oh,” she whispered, as his fingers rubbed her ass in time to his mouth roving down to her collarbone.

Her head spun from the sensation, and her core tightened each time Mason’s teeth nipped her flesh. When he brought his head up from her neck, their eyes met, and neither could look away.

“Are you sure?” he asked, his tone strained, the words barely audible over the pounding of her heart.

Lacey nodded. “Yes,” she whispered. “Please, Mason. I need you. I need this.”

Something flashed in his eyes, but Lacey didn’t have time to identify it. His mouth covered hers in a bruising kiss, turning the heat up from a simmer to a blazing boil.
