She really didn’t.

Mason briefly closed his eyes and rubbed the back of his neck. “The mark binds us together. For couples who haven’t been together for at least a year, if they try to remain separated, the mark compels them to go to each other. And if they don’t …”

“If they don’t, what?” Lacey pressed, the cold hand of dread slithering up her spine.

“Then both will experience the most terrible pain of their lives until they find each other, or kill themselves from the madness of it.”

Lacey’s jaw dropped open, and her mouth ran dry. This was entirely new information. Information that she didn’t want to hear. She shook her head, her chest starting to race within the confines of her chest. “I don’t believe you.”

Shadows swirled behind Mason’s eyes like a flickering memory. “I’ve seen it happen. It tears the soul to shreds, drives you to the point of insanity then flips you over the fucking edge. Too long apart and you’ll need to be put down. Some of the survivors can’t bear it and kill themselves. I don’t want that to happen to either of us. We must stay together. If not for us, then for Karis.” The muscle in his jawline started to tick. “My sister means everything to me. I won’t let Sampson get his grimy hands on her.”

Lacey swallowed. The walls of the cabin seemed to close in, and the breath in her throat turned to a hard lump, making it hard to breathe.

“I … I can’t do this,” she whispered, turning away from him.

She needed to get away, to think things through. She couldn’t do that with Mason and that intoxicating scent of his muddling her thoughts.

The walls closed in further, and Lacey headed straight towards the door, and the freedom beyond it.

“Lacey!”

She turned at the sound of her name on his lips. He wore a panicked look over his face, and his jaw tightened. “Go. Think things through. I know you need space to come to terms about all of this. But I won’t leave town without you. You’re mine, don’t forget that.”

Taking a deep breath, Lacey held it in her lungs for a long moment as she stared back at the man who had first been nothing but a simple job, but had quickly become something more. Something dangerous to her sanity. Releasing it, she turned around and stepped through the door, his words ringing in her ears, cutting off anything her brain may have come up with in response.

She was his.

And that was exactly what she was afraid of.
