But how the hell had they found them so fast?

Suddenly, the sound of birds scattering from the tops of the trees, the leaves rustling, came shooting through the air. A second later, a hand wrapped around her neck, squeezing to the point of pain. Hot breath warmed her skin. “Hello, Mundie.”

Lacey’s eyes bulged out of their sockets at the familiar voice, and her gut clenched with new dread that froze her soul.

“Hello, Sam,” she squealed. A whimper slid from her lips.

A growl resounded within her ear. “Let’s take a walk, shall we?”

Still keeping an iron grip on her neck, Sam pushed her forward, causing another pulse of pain that sent white lights flashing behind her eyes. He followed behind her, never letting her ago, even when her feet stumbled over a fallen branch that the shadows hid from her sight. But no matter how many times her feet faltered, he kept her going.

Lacey forced herself to try and remain calm. There would be no use in trying to fight him. Shifters, even the weakest of them, were twice as strong as humans. Lacey could hold her own in a fight, had done so more than a few times over the course of her career, but there would be no chance in hell against Sam.

No, the best course of action, she knew, was to stay calm, get as much information from him as she could, search for a weak spot in his defences, and hopefully make her escape with Mason and Karis. She wouldn’t leave either of them behind.

But first she needed to know what he’d done with her mother before she could go anywhere. She could still hear her screams ringing in her ears like a bad son on repeat.

Fear slid down her spine like ice, turning the blood in her veins to slush as they reached the cabin. Screams and shouts poured through the air, young, female cries. A second later, two burly men carried Karis out of the door by her arms and legs, her body writhing and her red hair covering her face as she flailed around, trying with all her strength to get out of their grasp.

Lacey’s eyes roamed around, searching for any other movement, her ears struggling to hear anything other than screaming and the rapid beating of her heart. But she found neither.

Where the hell are you, Mason?

Then it dawned on her. He was probably trying to find the right opening to make his grab. She had to stall for time.

Swallowing around a knot in the back of her throat, Lacey struggled to speak around Sam’s hold. “How’d you get here?” she asked, tears starting to leak from the corners of her eyes.

Part of Sam’s face appeared over her shoulder and his fingers squeezed around her neck once more, cutting off her air supply. “Your phone told me exactly where I needed to go.”

Lacey’s eyes widened and fury merged with the pain. “You put a tracker on it before you gave it to me.”

Sam nodded, a grin splitting his face. What she wouldn’t give to smash her fist through it. “Sure did. I knew you had the skills to find them both, but I kinda guessed you wouldn’t give up their location without … a little encouragement. As soon as you stopped in this dead-end town, I knew this would be the right place. We’ve been here for a day, just waiting for you.”

Anger rushed through her, boiling her blood to simmering point. “You bastard.”

Laughter rang through the air, swirling in her ears. A triumphant smirk stretched across his face. “That I am, but a bastard that gets what he wants.”

His eyes swept to his lackeys stilling holding onto a struggling Karis. She managed to get a foot free and planted a hard kick to one of their faces before his hands possessed it again. “Tie her up, gag her, and take her to the truck. I’ll be along shortly. First, I want to see my darling nephew.” He brought his face closer to Lacey’s neck and sniffed. “Where’s lover boy? You reek of him. I paid you to find him, not fuck him. What was it – you had one taste of wolf when you were younger and decided you wanted more? What a fucking slut you are. I should’ve taken your head like that worthless pup of yours.”

Lacey’s gut clenched with rage that sent every ounce of blood scalding through her veins. She vowed to get out of this, to gut the bastard for everything.

For Nathan.

For Karis.

For Mason.

For their parents.

For her.

Even if it was the last thing she did, even if it cost her goddamn life, Sam would pay for this.

With his fucking blood.

Karis shouts tore the night air to shreds as the shifters holding her started making their way through the trees. The anger snaking through her veins morphed into fear. Something had to be done before they managed to take her away.

Then she felt it.
