“Your house is bigger, but mine is closer to work.” His gaze went to the doorway. “You know, it’s a shame to have everyone think we were doing something that we weren’t, and it occurs to me that we’ve never done it in our offices.”

A memory returned, and Anna leaped off the couch. She gathered her stuff including her mother’s jewelry box. When he looked at her in confusion, she said, “Let’s go to your place. Now.”

“I like an eager woman.”

“My box,” she said. “Remember? I can’t wait to see all the stuff from my childhood. Please, take me home with you now, and be patient while I look through the box.”

He slipped an arm around her waist and steered her to the elevators. The first one that opened was crowded. He gestured for them to keep going, but she shook her head at him. Taking his hand she stepped into the crowded steel box and pulled him with her. The door slid shut. With him beside her, she didn’t feel trapped.

She wrapped both arms around one of his and rested her head against him. Feeling loved for the first time since her family died chased away her demons. All doubt fled. Something deep inside told her that Skylar wouldn’t hurt her again. She could trust him. They were destined to be together for life.

Amazing. She would soon be his wife, and someday she’d be a mother. The best thing of all is she’d have a family of her own. Plus, she had his family to love.

Her jaded outlook on fairy tales also disappeared. The two of them were going to have their happily-ever-after. They could do anything as long as they were together.
