"If he knows anything, if Cade tries to get in touch, anything, we'll know about it, Bex. We will beat him at this game, and we will end him."

"Spoken like a true Electi."

"No, spoken like a friend. I was serious when I told Cargill that I'm done. I'll see all this through, and then I'm just going to be regular Channing Rexford again."

"And Sasha?"

"Mine. I can be her prosapia," he chuckles.

"Only if you wear a white dress."

We shoot the shit for a while longer, pushing everything else aside and just trying to be regular college kids who are actually enjoying life for a few minutes.

"We should get back," he finally says.

"Yeah, I don't want to miss anything."

"We're all going to have to go back to class soon, and shit is going to be a hell of a lot harder with us all over the place."

My heart drops into my stomach. "I know."

"Mia will have full-time security. We'll do everything we can to protect her."

But…

He doesn't say that final word out loud, but I hear it loud and clear.

"I know. We just need to pray that he fucks up and we get to him before then."

"Maybe you should get her away for a bit. Somewhere she can properly relax before the funeral."

I scrub my hand down my face. "Fuck, the funeral. I'd never considered—"

"We've got it all covered. You and Mia don't need to worry about a single thing, but it's going to be hella hard on her."

"I can't even imagine."

"No, me neither."

We slowly make our way back. I'm relieved when I see the security that are working the house all stand to attention when they hear our approach; it fills me with a little confidence that they are actually on the ball.

They relax the second we emerge and holster their guns as we walk up the driveway and to the house.

But as good as it feels to know they're here, doing their job, I think we all know that when Cade strikes it's not going to be by walking up to the house in daylight. That is not that motherfucker's style.

I don't bother stopping in the kitchen as I pass. Instead, I head straight up to my room to shower. When I get to the top of the stairs, I look toward where both Mia and Sasha's rooms are. I desperately want to go down there and check she's okay, and my heart sinks knowing that she doesn't want me to.

It's just temporary,I tell myself as I force my legs to walk in the direction of my own bedroom instead.

I shower, pulling on a clean pair of boxers and falling onto my bed as the sun descends in the sky and casts an orange hue across my room. Watching the shadows from the trees dance across my wall, I attempt once more to get inside Kingsley's head.

"What is your next move, you motherfucker?"

I don't realize that I've drifted off to sleep until my bedroom door is thrown open and someone calls my name. I sit up, blinking against the darkness, willing my heart to calm the fuck down.

"It's Mia," Channing says. "We can't wake her up. We're worried she's going to hurt herself."

I'm out the door and flying toward her room as Channing continues to talk behind me.
