"No, Bex. It's not. It will never be enough until they fix it. They need to find him, and they need to kill him."

"I know, baby," I whisper in her ear. "I know."

"Can you please get her out of here?" Phillip instructs. “And remember what I said, Easton.”

Her entire body tenses in anger at his words, but I doubt she understands his warning.

"Come on."

"No, Bex. I want answers."

"I know, so do I, but you're not going to get them like this."

"No, I need—NO!" she cries when I throw her over my shoulder and walk out of the room with her kicking and screaming.

Footsteps sound out behind me, but I don't look back to see who has followed us. It doesn't matter who it is; I can't imagine it will help us get the answers that we so desperately need.

I place Mia on her feet and press her back against the wall out in the hallway. Her chest heaves as her tears continue to cascade down her cheeks, although her sobs have subsided. "It's okay, baby," I say softly, swiping my thumb over her cheeks to clear her tears away.

Her eyes hold mine for a beat before a shadow falls over us, and she looks over my shoulder at whoever it is.

"We should talk," a familiar voice says, and my spine straightens.

"It's a little late for that now, don't you think?"

"Bexley, trust me when I tell you—"

"Trust you?" I ask, spinning toward Marcus and holding his eyes. "Trust you? You did this. All of this is because of your lies and bullshit. I never wanted any of this, but you stuck me in the middle of it to do your dirty work. I hope you know that all this bloodshed is on your hands. You don't get to control people's lives like this."

"Just let me explain a few things."

I stare at him, trying to decide if anything he would be willing to tell me would be worth it. "Not now. I'm taking Mia home. When you're ready to tell me everything, call me."

"Bexley," he calls as I lead Mia down the hallway, but it's too late. I'm done with Quinctus.

Right now, I just want to look after my girl.

Mia

Bexley manhandles me out of the church. My lungs burn with fury, a deep-seated need for answers consuming every last shred of my rationality.

“I need to know…” I cry, whacking my fists against his chest, desperate for him to let me go. But his grip on me only tightens.

“Fuck, Mia,” he hisses when I catch his face, dropping me to the ground.

We’re outside now, surrounded by the trees and gravestones and the ominous black iron fence that marks the perimeter. I half expect Bexley to shove me toward the car. Sasha didn’t want to bring me here. but I gave her no choice, lifting her keys. I told her that if she didn’t drive me, I’d drive myself.

I feel her eyes on us, watching. She tried to tell me this was a bad idea, but it fell on deaf ears. I need answers.

I need to know why.

Bexley stares at me like I’m a wild animal he doesn’t know how to tame as my chest heaves with every ragged breath.

I glance back at the door we just burst through. If I’m quick, I could make it back inside.

“Don’t even think about it,” he says, shaking his head. “I know you’re hurting, Mia. I know how hard this—"
