I lay with her in my arms for hours, listening to her breathing and the sounds of the chatter below filtering up to me. I had no idea how Hadley was going to take the news about Alex, but she was surprisingly accepting of the revelation. I guess that's how it is when you grow up in a place like Gravestone. Living with lies and secrets galore must eventually harden you not to be surprised by anything.

In the end, my need for the bathroom forces me to roll Mia off and slip out of bed. I silently make my way out of her room and close the door behind me, hoping that she'll be able to get some more sleep without me there.

After making use of the bathroom, I head downstairs, pull a beer from the fridge, and go back out to the deck where the three of them are still sitting around the fire.

"Went well then, I assume?" Cole asks the second I emerge.

My lips part to say something, but I can tell by his knowing smirk that he's aware of what went down upstairs.

"She's asleep," I finally say, dropping into one of the spare chairs.

"She’ll be okay," Hadley says softly. "And please, take all of his advice with a pinch of salt. He likes to think he knows all there is to know about women."

"Excuse me?" Cole barks, looking totally offended by his fiancée’s words.

Hadley waves him off, which only infuriates him further.

"I knew exactly how to get you out of your head, didn't I?"

"Maybe so, but I'm not sure I'd give anyone advice based on our sex life."

Cole scoffs, making me even more curious about the two of them. "You love it, and you know it."

"Yes, but Mia might not."

"Every woman needs their man to take charge every now and then. Just look at Mia. Bex clearly took my advice—we heard the evidence—and now she's sleeping soundly, her nightmares long forgotten as she remembers just how good he made her feel."

"Because sex fixes everything," Hadley mutters, crossing her hands over her chest.

"Did I say that?" Cole balks.

"No, but you're thinking it. Women are way more complex than men when it comes to their emotional needs."

"Oh really?" He raises a brow, waiting for her to elaborate.

I sit back with my bottle of beer, tipping it to my lips while I watch the couple bicker away.It only takes three minutes tops before Cole hauls Hadley onto his lap, silently proving his point as he takes charge and shoves his tongue down her throat while palming her ass.

"I need to get laid," Alex mutters as we watch.

"Careful, Rexford. You're giving off Ashton vibes right now."

"Fuck off, Easton. I'm nothing like that twisted motherfucker."

"Huh, and to think… I thought he was your new BFF."

"He gave me a few pills and supplied me with some stellar pussy. He's never been my friend."

I tip the dregs of my beer into my mouth as Alex falls silent, but it's only for a few seconds.

"Do you believe that he really knew nothing about Cade's plans?"

"No," I answer without missing a beat. "I wouldn't trust that the sky was blue if he told me. Why, are you about to tell me you do?"

"I don't know. I don't want to. I know he's never proven himself to be trustworthy, but there was something about him when he turned up last weekend."

"He's a fucking good actor, that's all it is. He probably knows exactly where Cade is. Hell, he's probably hanging out in his bedroom and fucking Brook any chance he gets."

"You spoken to her?"
