“Just do it, now.”

“Yeah, man, whatever you say.” They take off, leaving us alone.

“Come on, let’s get you out of here.” Bexley stalks straight out of my room and takes me to his.

Gently, he lowers me onto his bed and sits beside me, raking a hand through his hair. “What did you take?”

“W-what?”

“Mia, what did you take?”

“Two Xanax. But they wouldn’t—"

“You’re stressed, fatigued… you suffered a huge fucking trauma…”

“You don’t believe me.” I wrap my hands around my body, trying to fold in on myself.

He twists toward me, cupping my face in his big hands. “Look at me, baby. Look at me…” Slowly, I lift my eyes to his, the blue of his grounding me. “You are safe here, Mia. You’re safe here.”

“But I—"

“He’s not here, baby. He’s not. I need you to believe me. I need you to—"

“I am not crazy, Bexley. I know what I saw. I know what I felt…” But as I say the words, I know I can’t trust them, because I can’t trust my mind anymore. Everything is upside down. Reality and my nightmares blur together, twisting and contorting into something I can’t control.

I climb off his bed and stand up, swaying slightly.

“Whoa, Mia, what are you—"

“Go. I need to go.”

“You think I’m going to let you out of my sight now? I’m not. No fucking way.”

“I’m not a child. I don’t need babysitting,” I yell, frustration coating my words. “I just… I need for it to stop.” My fingers slide into my hair, tugging the roots. “I need to feel like I’m not one second away from losing myself. He broke me, Bex. He broke me, and I’m not sure I’ll ever—"

Bexley prowls toward me, and instinctively I back up until my back hits the wall. “What are you—"

“Shh.” He presses his finger against my lip. “You say you’re broken, so let me put you back together. This isn’t you, Mia. You’re stronger than this. You’re so strong, baby.” He presses his hand against the wall beside my head, leaning in to run his nose along my cheek. “I am so fucking sorry about your parents. I am. But you cannot let them win. You cannot lethimwin. You’re mine, Mia. And I’ll do whatever it takes to bring you back to me. Even if you don’t like me for it.” His hands slide gently to my throat, his fingers circling me there.

A tremor of fear goes through me, but it’s edged with anticipation. A drug-induced haze still lingers in my mind, but I feel more grounded in this moment than I have in a while.

“You’re mine, Mia.” Desperation tinged with possessiveness glitters in Bexley’s eyes. “And I won’t fucking lose you to him. I won’t.”

Bexley

Reaching out, she rips my hand away from her throat.

"I'm not yours though, am I? I'm not anyone’s right now. I don't know who the fuck I am or what I'm even doing here." Fear and confusion flash through her eyes.

I knew the second I looked at her that she had taken something. It wasn't just fear I could see in her eyes; they were blown in a way I've never seen before.

I knew she'd been taking Xanax from Sasha. I also knew it was a bad idea, but Mia won't listen to a fucking thing I say right now.

"He was right there, Bexley," she screams, her body trembling as she recalls what she thought happened.

"I know, baby."
