“What about him?” Bexley releases another steady breath. “Come on, let’s go inside and take a look around.”

The air is thick between us, so I’m grateful to step out of the car and inhale a deep breath. Bexley gets our bags out of the trunk and motions me to follow him to the cabin.

“There should be a key, right…" He reaches for the lock box hanging at the side of the door and punches in the code, dipping his hand inside. “Bingo.” Bexley retrieves the key and unlocks the door. Dropping the bag to the floor, he rummages inside, pulling out a gun.

“What the hell?” I gasp.

“It’s just for emergencies. Wait here while I check out inside.” He disappears, calling my name a few seconds later.

Grabbing our bags, I enter the cabin.

“Come here,” he says, and like a moth to a flame, I go to him.

I’m still angry. It vibrates inside me like a living thing. But when Bexley takes the bags from my hands and pulls me into his arms, I let him. Because despite everything, I still need him.

“I’m sorry,” he breathes. “I’m so fucking sorry.”

I slide my hands up his chest, fisting his hoodie. “I told you… I told you I was see—"

“Shh, Mia.” He holds me tighter, crushing me to his chest and burying his face into the crook of my neck.

Silence engulfs us as we stand there, wrapped up in each other, the weight of reality pressing down on us.

“I let you down.” Bexley finally lifts his remorseful gaze to mine.

“You didn’t want to believe it.”

“No, but I should have believed you. You’re my girl, Mia. You’ll always be my girl.”

“I still don’t know what was real and what was my mind playing tricks…”

“It doesn’t matter.” A shudder goes through him. “All that matters is that you’re safe. You’re safe, Mia, and I’ll never let anything hurt you again.”

“You can’t promise me that, Bex. Not in this world.”

His hands go to my face, and he touches his head to mine. “Yes, I can. There isn’t a single thing on Earth I wouldn’t do to protect you. I won’t make the same mistake twice, Mia.” One of his hands curves around the back of my neck, and he brushes his lips over mine.

“Bexley.” My voice cracks as I gently pull away. “It’s not that simple.”

“I know.” Regret coats his words.

“What’s the plan? We can’t stay here forever. What about classes? What about our friends? What about Quinctus once they find out we’re gone?”What about Cade? His name teeters on the tip of my tongue, but I swallow the words.

He will always be the third person in our relationship. Whether Cade is alive or… I can’t say the word. He’ll be there. Haunting us.

“I don’t know,” Bexley admits. “I just needed to get you out of there. I’ll speak to Phillip. We’ll figure it out.”

“You know this only ends one way.” My voice quivers.

“Yeah, I know. But I can’t lose you, Mia. I won’t.”

“I’m going to lay down. It’s been a long night.”

“Okay.” He gives me a small nod. “I’ll check in with Channing and the others.”

I go to find the bedroom, but Bexley snags my wrist at the last second. “It’s you and me, Mia.”

As I walk away, I want to believe him.
