“Better, lighter…”

“Good, that’s good. But listen, man, what’s the plan here?”

“I don’t know… fuck, I don’t know. I thought we’d have more time, I thought—"

“Yeah, it’s a fucking mess. What did Phillip say?”

“Exactly what you said. It was a car accident. The driver lost control of the SUV.”

“You think it’s Kingsley?”

“Don’t you?” Bexley snaps.

“I mean, it looks suspicious. You’re really going back there?”

“What choice do I have? He’s family. He doesn’t have anyone else.”

“And if it’s a trap?”

“Then I guess I’d better be ready.”

“Maybe you can turn it to your advantage,” Channing says, and my heart catapults into my throat.

“How’d you figure?”

“There’s only one way this ends, man. You gotta know that.”

“Yeah, I’ve been thinking the same thing.”

“Q are dragging their asses. I don’t know what Lincoln has on them, but they’re stalling, trying to buy more time. Something doesn’t add up.”

“I think you’re right.”

A chill runs through me. I don’t want Bexley going up against Cade. It’s the last thing I want. But someone has to stop him, or at least try.

I won’t just stand by and watch, I can’t.

“Use me.” I reveal myself.

“Mia, what the fuck?” Bexley’s eyes pop open, a mask of betrayal sliding over his expression.

“You heard me. Use me.”

“No, no fucking way.”

“I’m the one Cade wants. If you’re right and your grandad got hurt… because of me… I can’t have any more blood on my hands.” My body trembles.

“Bexley’s right, Mia. It’s too dangerous.” Channing offers me a sympathetic smile.

“So what? You just expect me to stay here, hiding like some coward, while you go back to Gravestone? This is my fight too.”

“Mia, baby, don’t do this.” Bexley stalks toward me, running his hand down my cheek. “I need you safe. I need to know you’re here, out of harm’s way.”

Tears prick the corners of my eyes. “And I need to do this. Cade wants me. It makes sense to use me as bait. I trust you, Bexley. I know you won’t let anything happen to me. But I need to do this.”

Because all of this waiting around, all of this inaction and looking over my shoulder is killing me.

He glares at me, the muscle in his neck pulsating as he grinds his teeth together.
