“I can do without them.” He says it without hesitation. “If you can do without invitingyourfriends.”

I swallow because I haven’t really thought about that. Maker has told me I have friends but he’s also told me that involving them in my life may be complicated. I’m not exactly sure why it would be complicated, considering anything familiar could trigger my memories.

“Alright, I won’t invite them to our wedding but I’d like to talk to them...”

“Please...I’d rather you didn’t.”

Jerking, I stare at him, surprised at the doom in his voice and his eyes have blackened. His hands go to my shoulders, clasping gently but his eyes are furious.

“Your friends are all men, beloved,” he says and I gasp in wonder because I thought I’d be a girl’s girl. “Do you understand why you must leave them behind to give room for your future husbands?”

My heart pounds in my chest.

“There’s enough room for everyone...I t...think,” I stutter but he doesn’t seem convinced.

“I don’t share. I don’t want them to listen to your voice, see your mouth move or touch you. Even if it’s just a hug or a simple handshake, it would still kill me to know that they touch what’s mine.”

“But if we’re just friends...”

“They’re males,” he replies a little brusquely and he takes my hand and puts it on his shaft, making me gasp. “And they all have this. And they all want to use it on you, secretly hoping they’ll get you pregnant and make your body birth their offspring’s.”

“But that’s your job,” I protest and Maker lets out a low growl in agreement. “And I won’t see them anymore if that’s all they want from me.”

He squeezes his eyes and his length swells in my hand. “See what you do to me? You’re going to make me spill until I flood the whole room,” he rasps and he presses down on himself, grimacing and he’s only able to get himself under control when I protest that he’ll soil my nice clothes and he drags a ragged breath. “Forgive me, beloved. For acting like a caveman just now. Do you think you can forgive me?”

I nod, adding, “I don’t think I could be mad at you for any more than two seconds.”

Something flashes in his eyes. “Let’s hope it stays that way. No matter what...” he trails off when his phone keeps pinging again and again and he grabs it and I watch him curiously.

“What is it?”

His brows frown. “Need to cancel all my sessions today,” he murmurs and I remember that he told me he’s a psychologist. “I have other duties.”

“Such as?”

“Making sure you’re alright,” he replies and I flush because I don’t want to be a burden. And I don’t want to deprive his patients of their time with him. They must need him so much and I feel a flutter in my chest. What a hero he is...so decent, so caring, so much concern for the wellbeing of others...

I put my hand over Maker’s. “Go,” I insist, “I’ll be fine without you for a couple of hours.”

“No,” he says firmly. “I’m staying. I’m not leaving my fragile bride on her own.”

“But those people are counting on you. You’re probably their whole universe.”

“The only universe I care about occupying is yours,” he rasps and there’s so much electricity between us that the air sizzles.

“I’ll manage on my own...I promise...” I begin when his eyes darken again.

“Why are you so eager to be away from me?” he says and he sounds triggered as if some old wound came to the surface. “Why do you want me to leave you?”

“It’s only for a couple of hours,” I squirm and his eyes narrow.

“When and if I leave will you reach out to those friends of yours?” His fists clench.” Is that why you want me gone so that you can chitchat with dirty men who only want to use you?”

I gasp, taking a couple of steps back. “Of course not!”

His eyes remain narrowed. “Then what will you do?”

Shrugging I murmur, “Maybe go into town or go the grocery s...store...”
