She raises her brows in surprise but reaches out with her arms, putting them on my shoulders and I pick her up. Our eyes dance and shimmer when they meet and she is even more breathtaking than the first time I saw her. There’s a rumor going around that Mr. Rowe has the most beautiful wife in town.

Obviously I’m biased but I think they’re right.

I put her down and she lands on her ballerina slippers that she likes to wear around the house. To this day she’s honoring my wishes of not cutting her hair and since she only trims it now, it almost reaches down to her hips.

Pursing her lips in a smile, she says, “Its Friday today. Are you up for poker night?”

I nod because she loves poker night, loves having my friends and their wives over. And she loves having their kids over too. Clasping my hand around her shoulder, I begin to lead her through the house while listening to how her day has been.

There’s a new thrill in her voice that wasn’t there before and that sheen of hers has intensified until she almost sometimes blinds me with it. She thinks that she can hide things from me but she can’t. And I’ve known about it for a while now but decided not to tell her.

Instead I’m going to surprise her.

“Where are we going?” she asks as we pass the third floor and there’s a knot between her brows. We’re rarely up here but this part of the house was frequently used in the past. It was even here where she took her first steps.

“To the attic,” I reply, “have you ever been up there?”

“Once, I think. Maybe a year ago when I had to put away some boxes.”

I nod, clutching her shoulder and a smile plays behind my lips because I’m eager to see her reaction. I’ve been working on it for weeks after she’s fallen asleep and once she almost caught me. She’d woken up, searching for me and calling my name and I had to distract her by making love to her. And it worked because the next day, she didn’t ask me where I’d been.

“Why are we going up there?” she says as we walk up a small staircase and I stop in front of the door that’s been painted a bright white.

“You’ll see but you have to close your eyes first.”

Her lids lower without any protest and an excited tint colors her face and I open the door.

“All right, you can look now.”

“Bram...” she whispers, her eyes tearing and she puts a hand in front of her mouth and her shoulders shake like she’s about to start crying from happiness as she looks around at the nursery, the pastel colored walls, the crib that I had flown in from Scotland, the stuffed toys decorating the shelves.

Her eyes go to mine. “How did you know? It’s still so early and I wanted to be s...sure before I told you.”

“Had a feeling,” I say, “besides I’ve seen you drink warm milk before going to bed and you seemed happier than usual...”

Her features light up and she takes in the rest of the room. She traces her fingers over a music box and it starts to play and her tears fill up again but she pushes them back, putting her face against my chest instead. She always used to be worried that she would ruin my expensive shirts by doing that until I taught her better.

“This used to be my nursery,” I rasp in her ear. “Then it was yours. And now it will be our baby’s.”

She nods her dark head, whispering, “Thank you, thank you, thank you.”

This means a lot to her and it means a lot to me. The Rowe family will continue to grow. The lineage would have ended with me had I not found her. Without her, I would have been beyond redemption but she saved me. As of now we will have sons who will carry the name on and keep our traditions alive. Nuzzling her jawline, I feel a punch in my heart when she turns her neck to the side and lets out a low moan.

Tracing my lips down her throat, I tell her how much I love her and she shivers. She doesn’t cower from my hands or teeth because she knows there is tenderness in me. She knows there is loyalty to my bite. And love.

Above all there is love.

The End
