Nell looks at me in surprise then at our daughter who starts fussing. “Are you sure?”

I nod, because there’s something I want to show her.

I twirl the baby around and talk to her while Nell gets ready which doesn’t take long, walking back out to us in a flirty sundress with honeybees on it. Looking like she tastes better than a juice dripping peach she makes my mouth water and I have to restrain myself from not biting into my wife that delivered a baby only a couple of weeks ago.

Making our way out of the mansion, the corners of my mouth pull at the sight of Nell’s flushing face. There’s a giant portrait of her in the foyer that I insisted on putting up, even though I know it embarrasses her.

But she’ll get used to my intense gestures. Eventually.

Outside, the sun is just about to go down as we walk down the crowded street and people greet us and wave. That’s not what it was like in the beginning, then they turned their noses and looked down at Nell even though I dressed her in jewels and the most expensive clothes I could find.

They still whispered.

Look at the way Mycroft Smith is showing off his new pet. And look at that red hair. It’s like she wants to be seen! By the way, do you think those diamonds really are real?

I’ve heard he treats like a goddess but I wouldn’t be surprised if he pumps and dumps that little tart. I’ve been told she’s from the uh...less civilized parts of town.

Oh dear, she’s already showing. And do you see the size of her belly? It’s like they’re rubbing our faces in it on purpose!

I did everything to protect Nell from them, to keep her from wanting to leave me in case their cruelty got to her. But then she told me, her love for me is stronger than anybody else’s opinion and when we married and her stomach started growing, the people on Silver Lake had no choice but to accept her.

And about time, because I was only seconds away from finishing them all.

Even Lucretia has finally calmed down by now. She’s moved to New York but our relationship isn’t strained ever since she apologized to Nell, groveling thoroughly, even going so far as to now calling NellBig Mama.

Once we’ve finish our round in the park, we walk back to our home and Nell is steering her steps towards the entrance when I stop her. My hand clasps around her smooth skin and despite being together for a while now, her softness still manages to surprise me.

“Wait,” I say, “there’s something I want to show you.”

She raises her brows. “What’s that?”

“A surprise.”

Her cheeks flush, spreading over her freckles and she whispers. “Is it another portrait?”

“Better up,” I grunt and her face pales.

“Oh, what have you done now?”

Choking down a chuckle, I jerk my head for her to follow me as the nanny comes down and takes our daughter away for her nap. Taking Nell’s hand, I lead her to the back of the house and tell her to close her eyes.

“You know I don’t like surprises,” she groans and I brush my lips along her shoulder, causing her to shiver.

“Think you’ll like this one,” I say and she opens her eyes, staring out at the silvery lake, with the new moon just popping up down by the horizon.

Nell frowns, looking at me hesitantly. “I don’t get it...”

“I bought it for you,” I rasp. “The lake. It’s private now.”

Gasping, her fingers curl around my arm. “M...Mycroft,” she stutters, her voice thick as syrup from emotion as I play with the braid hanging down her back.

“Had no choice. Couldn’t stand the thought of some fucker swimming in it with you or watching you...”

She starts laughing, before jumping into my arms, her plump butt landing in my palms like a little gift. “You’re a savage. Just like they all said.” She presses her salacious lips against mine. “And they were right about something else too. You do treat me like a goddess.”

“This is only the beginning,” I tell her, “I’ll have buildings named after you, I will build statues of you on these very grounds...”

I keep talking while she listens to me, her eyes shocked but a little glassy like she’s secretly delighted. Words can’t describe how much I love this girl that stumbled into my office with a deer in the headlights look on her face. She tamed me, allowed me to marry her and gave me my second child when I thought I would never have another.

She controls my whole world, makes it spin around her and her alone and her smooth fire warms me up from the inside as she burns for me and me alone.

The End
