I stare at her in shock.

“Look what you did!” she shrieks as ice coats my veins and it feels like I’ve shattered too. “Do you even know how much that’s worth? Big Daddy, look what she did!”

With tears burning in my eyes, I look at Mr. Smith in horror, mortified that I’ve destroyed one of his precious belongings. “I’m sorry. I d...didn’t...”

“You’re going to have to replace it,” Lucretia continues and my stomach drops from anxiety when Mr. Smith snaps,

“Quiet! And Nell don’t touch those pieces, I don’t want you to cut yourself.”

He clasps my wrist but I jerk, because his touch burns me now and I excuse myself, muttering something about getting a broom. When I’m back they’re both gone and I breathe out, cleaning up the mess that Lucretia made.

She’s gone too far but I can’t tell Mr. Smith. There’s a gentleness in his eyes when he looks at his daughter and he’s a good dad. He probably wouldn’t believe me anyway but I don’t want to do anything that would jeopardize their relationship.

When I figure, I can’t put off his request any longer I steer my steps towards Mr. Smith’s office and to my surprise he’s not sitting behind his desk but leaning against it like he’s on edge.

“Close the door,” he says the minute I walk in and his face is tense, “we need to talk.”

Gulping, I do as he says, then bring out the duster and dust off the windowsill as he watches me with narrow eyes. I can feel his gaze and it feels like he’s stroking me, despite him not being too happy with me.

“What took you so long to come in here?” he says and I bite my lip.

“I told you,” I say softly. “I was busy.”

“That’s an excuse. You’re avoiding me. Why?”

My hands start shaking. “Am I in trouble?”

His eyes look bottomless, deep enough for me to drown in. “That depends entirely on you.”

“Because I broke the bust?” I ask and he straightens forcefully, his eyes firing scorching thunderbolts my way.

“I don’t give a fuck about the bust and will you stop with the cleaning?”

My mouth drops as well as my hand and I stare at him, not knowing what to do. He’s never talked to me that way before and a flash of guilt crosses his face but I jerk my head.

“I’m your maid, Mr. Smith. That’s what we do.”

He stabs his fingers through his hair in frustration, disheveling it even more. “But you’re not just my maid are you, princess?” he rasps. He stalks over to me, looking predatory. “I want things from you that are not part of your job.”

Inhaling, I move for the door when he clasps my elbow and yanks me towards his chest. He’s so hard and warm and my body goes soft at the contact. I can’t help it, he’s like a cloud filled with testosterone and lust and sweet, tender promises that whenever he passes over me I have no choice but to take him in.

“Where are you going?” he asks, looking down at me and I can’t look away from his eyes. Those steely, grey eyes that carry so much strength and yet when they’re on me, they flicker with vulnerability.

“I’ve heard rumors,” I begin and my voice trembles because I hate the thought of him with someone else. “About you having affairs with your help and I want none of that.”

His grip tightens.

“What the hell are you talking about?” he snarls and he’s so angry it almost scares me a little. “Who told you those lies?”

“Lies?” I whisper and he looks at me with a perplexed look in his eyes. I should’ve known not to listen to Lucretia. “They’re lies?” My knees wobble, feeling lax like jelly.

“Yeah, they are. Who told you that? Tell me and I will kill them.”

Shaking my head, I say, “It doesn’t matter.”

“Do you believe me then?”

“Yes,” I whisper and I stop breathing when he strokes his hand down my hair, the gentle touch intoxicatingly arousing, causing something to break free inside of me. “Kiss me...” I gasp and his feverish hiss makes me blush.
