“It’s a hunch,” she says. “And my hunches are usually right.” She stands and adjusts her skirt. “Thank you for your time, Mark.” She smiles, and then she turns on her heel and walks out.

I shake my head at the server. “Networking sucks.”

“Do you know who that was?”I ask Nadia as I fling the car door open and drop into the passenger seat. She looks over at me, one brow arched.

“A real killer, huh?”

“No, that was Ali Brown.”

“Ali who?”

“Ali Brown. You know, the sex guru.” I nod at the phone in her hand. “Look her up.”

I watch her face as she studies the search results.

“She lied about her name,” says Nadia. “And she schools men on eating box.” She bites her bottom lip as she meets my eye. “Interesting.”

“Eating box?”

“You know…jewel munching.”

“What?”

She rolls her eyes. “Never mind.”

“Wait. Oh, you mean—ah, I get it.” Suddenly it makes so much sense why Bethany is such a fan. “Anyway—interesting and fucking gorgeous. But not our killer.”

“How do you know?”

“She’s too high profile.”

“Well, I didn’t know who she was. If she were high profile, I’d know her.”

“Spoken like a true millennial.”

She starts the ignition and glances over at me. She has a glint in her eyes that gives me second thoughts about letting her drive my car. Unfortunately, I have no choice. I’m not exactly sober.

“So, what now?”

“I don’t know,” I sigh. “We keep searching.”

“You’re terrible at dating, boss.”

“Ali Brown. Do you think she’s a lesbian?”

Nadia lifts her phone from her lap and types something in. After a bit of squinting at the screen, she looks over at me. “No, why?”

“I need to figure out how to get a second date.”

“She’s out of your league.”

“I know.”
