Making a point of not kissing cheeks like they had in the past, they got into their separate cars and headed to Sea View.

In the middle of the night, Sandra woke up. At the other end of the couch, Andy Roman slept in all his glory. She studied him for a while; he was so handsome, that five-o’clock shadow and curly black hair looking so intentional. And he was so nice, and interested. She covered him with a blanket and headed to her bedroom, locking the door just to be safe.

In the morning she woke up to the sound of running water. Frowning, she got up and listened. It was coming from above her. Andy was awake and in the shower. She looked out the window, the sun was coming up, and there didn’t appear to be much wind, the umbrella on the terrace had been left up, and it was still upright.

Quickly showering, she dressed in clean spandex and a T-shirt and went out to fix coffee, but he had beat her to it, his computer open on the counter, news on the screen, and the smell of coffee brewing in the air.

“This is so nice,” she said, smiling at him. “A hot guy in my kitchen and coffee already made.”

He laughed. “Likewise.”

“I didn’t know you brought your computer.”

“I have to bring my computer when I’m away. Then if we get a case, I’ll be in touch and don’t have to rush to the office.”

“Ugh, I hope you don’t get a case,” she said, not ready to say goodbye.

“It’s been a quiet holiday weekend in the city, but the day is young.”

“Well, I still hope you don’t have to go.” Then she boldly said it. “I’m not ready to say goodbye to you.”

“I’m not either.”

“I feel like we should tidy things up,” she said, grinning. “My OCD.”

“Okay, you want an outline?”

“Sort of,” she said, flushing. “I feel like a jerk.”

“Don’t. I’m the same way. I like rules. I’m not going to pursue anyone, and I hope you won’t, either.”

“I won’t. I have a friend, an older man, but it died on its own. I’ll make it formal if that will help.”

“I’d like that. Now I’d like to tell you what I like about you after less than twenty-four hours.”

“Okay, I guess. That makes me a little nervous if it’s all superficial.”

“Let me be the judge of that. Okay, you ready?”

She nodded her head.

“There’s all the obvious stuff. You’re beautiful, smart, successful. Number one. You’re an adult. I really like that. I don’t want to be someone’s father.”

“Was that a problem in the past?”

“Yes. She came to me with some issues that her parents were unable to resolve and sort of dumped it on me. Don’t get me wrong, I loved Ginger with all my heart. I truly did. So that’s key for me, that you’re an adult, you might have had some problems, but you seem to have worked through them and are successful and are raising a child alone, without the help of his father.”

“This is true. Brent is something I’m proud of.”

“I feel like we’re equals in other ways,” he said. “If things progress, we’re financially stable.”

She nodded, thinking he might not know how stable she was, but willing to let that part remain a mystery for a while.

“I guess this means we’ll see each other again?”

“Absolutely. I was going to invite myself to stay through till Tuesday morning. But I need some clothes, and I don’t feel like going into the city for underpants. Is there a department store around here?”

Sandra laughed out loud. “Babylon even has clothing stores! Shall we go after coffee?”
